vlc as default player?

hi again

now i want to make vlc my default vide player. i rclick and avi -properties -open with, vlc is not listed so i click add, find vlc and i get this error msg 'could not add application to the database'....any idea how to fix this ?
othewise vlc works great

othewise vlc works great
In that same tab, click on enter custom command [or something like that - not on gnome right now] and type vlc down and press OK.
