HOWTO: Install Ubuntu on PS3 from Live CD

I found myself unable to use vfat filesystems, as the driver was a kernel module.

The solution is to mount the gentoo livecd, then mount the squashfs as loopback, then copy the /lib/modules from that to one's system.

I have been unable to get any sound working though, except the bootup drum sound. Seems to be an inconsistency with ALSA... but linux sound systems give me headaches.

I can't get ALSA to work right either. Anybody figure out a solution?

If I have time, I will be re-installing Xubuntu tonight. I intend to use this method, but use the Fedora kernel from the extra CD tonight, with the associated modules, etc, rather than the Gentoo one. This may help the sound issue, or maybe not

I will be reinstalling rather than modifying to double check this cookbook again.

This is currently not possible. This is not a problem with Ubuntu specifically, we just do not have drivers for the wifi yet.

Thanks for the reply! another question from the complete Noob, are there any specific advantages to having Ubuntu on there instead of YDL?

I played around with YDL at first. Install is REALLY smoothe. Sound worked great.

On the other hand, there wasn't nearly the huge amount of packages like in Ubuntu. Many things have to be compiled from source.

If we can just get ALSA working, Ubuntu will be THE setup to do for PS3.

So where would we go for ALSA help? Would the ALSA config on a YDL install help? I'm not really sure where to ask besides here . . .

Is your sound not working at all? Mine seems to work fine. I can play mp3s and the splash screen sounds work fine also. I haven't tested much else yet but those seem to work.
