How do you send message through lan on linux

So my buddy and I are both using ubuntu, but our school blocks all ports and websites for instant messaging. Is there a program for instant messaging through the network??

Linpopup shows up in synaptic for me, maybe you need to enable Multiverse and Universe repositories.
You might also think about running a Jabber server on one of the machines, or a Teamspeak server and have voice as well as chat.

nope everything is blocked websites are blocked with websense proxies are blocked as well. We hve a wireless network at school and my friend and I (ubuntu users) but we want to be able to talk to each other at school using lan cient that we can use. It must be server less becuz we cant get into those.

You can try Bonjour in Gaim as well. It is a LAN IM Protocol.
