Those who saying he is using a Mac are slightly misleading. Torvalds points out that he is using Apple Mac hardware but obviously he's running Linux on it.

No, Linus uses Mac hardware, but he has Linux installed on it. The Mac hardware was donated to him so he accepted the gift. See news items:

I have no idea what distro he uses... it's entirely possible that it's a custom build for his own purposes.
why distro? he just needs kernel , bootloader and a shell with vi :O
