Cool New to Linux? Need a program?

One thing that I noticed Ubuntu really needed was a place for newer users to be able to find out what apps to use. I know when I first started Linux less than a year ago, my biggest questions were "where is the Linux winamp" or "what is the Linux version of _______ program." So the purpose of this thread it to make a conversion chart. This will be a work in progress for a long time, so please chime in with good ideas for conversions. Only open source stuff please, and only the most developed programs in each category so as to not confuse. And nothing that isn't in the main/universe also please. I will also list programs that have Window's or OSX ports since a new user might not have any experiance with OSS).

Windows to Linux Conversion:

In Windows --------- In Ubuntu

Internet Explorer --------- Firefox

Microsoft Office --------- OpenOffice.org

Winamp -------- Xmms

Photoshop --------- Gimp

AIM, ICQ, MSN, Yahoo!, Jabber, IRC instant messaging --------- Gaim

Re: New to Linux? Need a program?

Wouldn't is make more sense to list Sound Juicer instead of goobox? After all, thats what comes with ubuntu.

The list is not a bad idea.

Keep um comming please (and someone do an OSX version please, I've never owned OSX).
OSX is Unix based, so you would pretty much used the same programs. But, there are quite a few Apple only programs, such as Appleworks, Fink, iMovie, etc., so I'll compile a list tomorrow.

Good Morning,

Not new to computers, but definitely new to Ubuntu Linux. I work in SVG for web-site building. I am familiar with the Gimp form Windows XP, but both Opera8 and Inkscape are cross-over programs (Opera even lists Ubuntu) and I am frankly in need of detailed help on how to use, and how to install into the Ubuntu "file manager." I downloaded two versions of Opera8 but was unable to resolve the installation issues.

Ubuntu has been a dream to install. I am dual booted with Win XP and have not encountered a single problem so far. Congratulations with a big C. (And that was starting from a download and doing an iso burn with Nero)

Help! from an experienced newbie, SirCoistrel aka Muzz
