i cant figure out how to install firefox 1.5. i downloaded the tar to my desktop, but now what?

Just follow the instructions in the wiki, you need to execute the comands there in a terminal.

Java is working for me
I have both 1.4 blackdown and 1.5 installed. I have no idea which one it is using. My guess would be 1.5

All I did was installl jre1.5 from the plf repos. I have the blackdown and plf versions installed. Installed Firefox as per the wiki how-to and it worked.

I've pointed some apps like openoffice at jre1.5 but I have no idea which one Firefox is using.

Is there anyway to do this easily on an AMD64 machine? I'm not a fan of compiling from source.

There are many bugfixes and nice new features in the new versions of t-bird. For example, there's a problem with 1.0.7 copying mail to IMAP Sent folders, which seems to have been resolved in 1.5. Version 1.5 can also also be set to beep with new mail, which I don't think is available in 1.0.7.
