    Code:

    sudo update-alternatives --install /usr/bin/javac java /usr/lib/jvm/jdk1.6.0/bin/java 30

    sudo update-alternatives --config java #choose java6

Yes, I tested with both jre and jdk. Both work. Patched java-package is now versioned as ubuntu2, do you have that one installed?

Worked for me, thanks. As a note, if installing on a box without x installed, you get some warning about x11 dependencies.

Also, this has been the best how-to I have read for linux in a while. Actually specified the build-essential package which no-one ever does. I am very grateful when no assumptions are made. Makes getting into this easier.

Feisty has Ubuntu provided sun-java6 packages to get Java 6.0.
