Arrow Vote Ubuntu As "The Very Best Of Open Source"!

"What is the absolute best that the open source model has to offer? The term is usually applied to software specifically, but it is used in this open, collaborative list to refer to any community developed project whose output is freely available to all to use and/or modify in any not-for-profit manner..."

Ubuntu is currently ranked in 5th place with 66 votes - Let's see if we can't make it to the top of the list!

I'm not sure Ubuntu deserves #5 on that list let alone #1. C'mon.. Linux? Wikipedia? Apache?

I agree. Don't get me wrong: Ubuntu rocks, but hey, you can't compare it to apache or wikipedia... I'm surprised MySql and PostgreSQL didn't rank higher, by the way.

I would vote for wikipedia but I won't register.

Ubuntu does not deserve #5, less so #1. You should vote based on merit.

Voted for Wikipedia. I see no reason to have Ubuntu and Linux both up there. Ubuntu doesn't belong.

I see it as a silly thing to vote on, but... Impossible to choose my favorite software!

Ruby on Rails (Fantasic, by the way! Just started delving into it!)
    Subversion
    GCC
    Eclipse
    ...Almost all fantastic.

I'm disappointed that they didn't have the Mongrel Web Server, but they had some stuff like "Microsoft Windows" in it. o_0

But... Is del.icio.us open source?!? 0_o I'm pretty sure it's not...

I don't think the poll is very well designed. First, I'd choose GNU C Compilers to be the Best Open Source project, and then Linux. Those catapulted Open Source to what it is today. And Ubuntu wouldn't be anything without Linux.

I think the people are looking too much at the apps and not at the tools used to build em.

All I can say is that I strongly disagree with the current number one--Firefox. Sure, great browser, but definately doesn't have the kind of impact that Wikipedia does, or the sheer vastness of Linux. I think the fact that Firefox is number one shows that it is more of a popularity contest. Oh, yeah, and I am part of team "I didn't vote because I didn't want to register."
