Updated/compiled the kernal using KernalCheck to the latest version ( I think it is 2.6.39.3) and when I rebooted I get a nongraphical tty interface. During the compiling I was told that my nvidia drivers would not work and would have to be reinstalled. I am able to boot into a graphical interface by choosing an older kernal(and I updated the nvidia drivers then).
One other thing, I notice if I go into Ubuntu Tweak and go into clean up old kernals that neither the of the two new kernals that appear on my grub menu are there, only the old kernals that were there before the new kernals were added.
I apologize for the lack of detail I probably should not have used KernalCheck without fully understanding what the implications of changing the kernal might be.
If the simple solution is to roll back to an earlier version of the kernal and delete 2.6.39.3 perhaps someone could offer some guidance in how to do that.
2.6.39.3 does not seem to work; if I mark it for removal in Synaptic will that correct my problem?

As for nVidia, you must login to new kernel and only ther you must/could install nVidia kernel - from now on you must install nVidia *.run script from nVidia site and none other.

Or ditch KernelCheck and search for new kernel at PPA - this kernel works with drivers from Ubuntu and you don't need to install manually anything.

As for UbuntuTweak - it could show only kernel that was developed by Ubuntu team.

Thanks but I am not sure how to run the nVidia *.run script from the tty interface or where to get it. I am not overly familiar with Linux. Is it safe to remove the Kernel 2.6.39.3 using Synaptic? Will my system then just revert to an earlier kernel?

Hey all,

I'm trying to patch (bfq/bfs) and compile the new 2.6.39.2 using this tutorial. I downloaded the 2.6.39 series bfq/bfs. i patched files and patched them in order. I got a few Hunks and i don't know how to fix them.

Terminal:

Thanks for this. It was really helpful and it answered my question. I wasn't sure if I could start from the configurations from my current 2.6.38 kernel with the new 3.0 mainline. In retrospect this makes sense since I read that the new version number is just to celebrate the anniversary of the kernel, not to mark a significant change in code.

Now if only I hadn't decided to compile a kernel while kernel.org was down for maintenance...

I'm pretty sure this is the correct thread for my question.

After upgrading to a new kernel do you have to recompile modules that you had to compile in your previous kernel if they are still not pre-compiled in the new one?

I just compiled coretemp due to it not supporting my core 2 duo processor. Just wondering if I have to compile it again if/when I upgrade to a new kernel. I'm not really wanting to find out the hard way.

yes, you must compile everything again
coretemp, gfx driver, wifi drivers (if not from kernel itself)
