If you wanna get rid of it you gotta recompile your kernel.
UPDATE: The following method does not work. Please refer to the next post.

Can't we use the "blacklist" to disable modules from auto-loading here?

    e.g. Inside /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist
    Code:
    blacklist ipv6
    blacklist ip6_tables
There may be more modules to be blacklisted though.

You can use blacklist to disable modules. However, in Jaunty, ipv6 is not a module, as has been stated a few times now, so that is irrelevant. a custom kernel must be recompiled if ipv6 is causing you problems.

However, this is getting rather off-topic. Sorry I mentioned it in my post.

To answer my own question that started all this mess, you can delete that huge directory (linux-source-*)you create while compiling so long as you don't need it to recompile with a different config soon. Just make sure you don't delete the new folder that contains the installed kernel (linux-headers-*).

    Re: Master Kernel Thread

I compiled the .30-rc3 kernel using this guide for my Dell inspiron 700m. Wow! The boot-up just flies. I already compiled the .28.1 kernel, and even though I noticed a boost then, it was nothing compared to this one.

Unfortunately, boot-up is as far as I got. Ubuntu couldn't mount my ext4 /home partition (even though / is also ext4) saying that it needed the CONFIG_LBD module (I guess I disabled too much stuff). Meaning that I have to compile it again (I already compiled it once before, because put the driver for the ipw2200 wireless in the kernel, instead of a module as you're supposed to do) (whoops!).

I'll perform this again and try it out. But I have a question: the kernel failed to load Apparmor. I'm a home user on a laptop, so I'm not extremely worried, but I'm wondering if Ubuntu uses it for anything by default (wireless or ethernet, for example).

Another question is that when the final .30 kernel comes out, can erase this rc folder after compiling the new one. I'm asking because it's such a huge directory. When I uninstalled the failed kernel last time, I rebooted under .28 and then tried to delete the .30-rc3 directory and the computer immediately crashed.

    EDIT:

    From Ubuntu Wiki:

    "Kernel upgrade / apparmor-module-source upgrade
When a new kernel is installed or when a new version of apparmor-module-source is installed, the apparmor module has to be recompiled :

    Code:
    sudo m-a -v -t -f build apparmor-modules
    sudo m-a -v -t install apparmor-modules
    "

I don't see myself using Apparmor at all, so first I have to wonder if I need to bother (i.e. is there any risk of breakage), and next, if I do, if I need to download this module or what, before carrying out these commands. I don't even know what "m-a" does, I can't find any info on it.

    Re: Master Kernel Thread

OK, I'm posting from the new .30-rc3 kernel and no problems so far. Well, except Apparmor is broken. I don't know if this is a problem, doesn't seem like it.

Anyways, thank you very much for this thread.

Now, to fix my blacklisted Intel driver!

Yes, haven't seen me using it neither...

Would you mind sharing your config? I liked your "I disabled too much stuff earlier "

There are good how-to's on disabling IPv6 in the Tips & Tutorials forum, simply searching the forum for "Disable IPv6" (without quotes) before posting here, would have yielded the following:

    1. How-To: Disable IPv6 to speed up internet
    2. OUTLINE: Disable IPv6

Simply reading the posts above concerning ipv6 in this kernel rather than posting 4-5 year old threads would probably have saved me from writing this answer.

    Common Human Behavior.

Posting those links may give someone a clue, you never know.
