I do not know that much about SSH, but what would happen if you typed in startx from your mobile phone?

oh well, you'd start an X session on the machine you've ssh'ed into of course, don't expect anything fancy to happen on the celly

The machine (what ever it is, be it a phone or a toaster) would have to be running an x server using the x server protocal for ssh -X to work.

I love using it though so I can check my kontacts from work and update things using the gui.

Using a smart phone with linux and qt/xorg should work, but the xwindows protocals have to be the same and I can't remember if they are for mobile to pc.

Neither. I connected over the net. I can do it from anywhere that I have phone service.

Well, I suppose I could VNC to it, but I figured that would be overkill.

Old news. The Zaurus Collie came out in 2002, if I'm not mistaken - that is a full-fledged Linux PDA, and you can turn it into a cell phone by putting in a CF GSM radio card.
I ssh to/from mine regularly. Starting X apps remotely works, too - both ways And my wife just got a Zaurus Akita If anyone is interested, I'll post pics.

You don't need a good reason; the fact that it can be done is reason enough!
