Laptop suspend on Fedora core 5

I just recently switched my work computer from Windows to Fedora Core 5. One of my main problems so far is with the suspend feature.
In windows, I could simply close my laptop lid, and it would suspend or hibernate or whatever the term is. Then I could open it back up and be right where I left off.
In redhat, however, it doesn't work so easily. I close the lid and I know it goes into some sort of suspend mode. The problem is when I open it back up, I can't get anything to appear on the screen. I can hear the fans and hard drive spin back up, but the screen just stays blank. Does anyone know what I can do to fix this?
