    StartUp-Manager

StartUp-Manager, or SUM, is a python-glade gui tool for configuring some things in grub and usplash.

    ***WARNING***
If you are unlucky, this tool could make your system unable to start. USE IT ON YOUR OWN RISK!
It is tested with Debian and with Ubuntu and Kubuntu, versions Breezy, Dapper(Breezy and Dapper needs version 1.0.2: http://web.telia.com/~u88005282/sum/....0.2-2_all.deb ), Edgy and Feisty.

    Installation instructions
Short: Install the deb from http://web.telia.com/~u88005282/sum/downloads.html

    Detailed: at http://web.telia.com/~u88005282/sum/installation.html

    2007-01-04: SUM has got a new home:http://web.telia.com/~u88005282/sum/index.html

Yes, quite excellent. This is a much-needed config tool.

I say you try to get this in the official repos!

Here's a feature request, if you're still thinking about it:
How about a section to to create a GRUB boot disk? (So I could install GRUB, with the appropriate configuration to boot Ubuntu, to a floppy disk, for instance).

You might want to get together with Dennis Kaarsemaker--He created Usplash-Switcher & as far as I know, is planning to include it in Fawn--Sounds like you have some code in common--Dennis was one of the people involved with Usplash development. I have suggested a couple of extra options for Switcher & he asked me to create a Launchpad "bug" for the notes---located at:
    https://launchpad.net/bugs/70954

Edit: The more I look at SUM--the more I think you & Dennis should talk-----

    Re: Start-Up Manager

    SWEET

I've been annoyed ever since I did a dist-upgrade to Edgy because I lost my splash screen altogether, along with any boot text. It also took about twice as long for my machine to boot up for some reason. I checked the forums, and the boot time issue was shared by other folks who lost their usplash screens.

I had tried a couuple of solutions posted to the forums, but they didn't work. Yesterday I found this post on Debianadmin.com, which talked about the boot up manager.

I tried BUM with the instructions on debianadmin, and it worked! I get my splash screen back. I'm still not seeing boot status messages, but boot time is about twice as fast as it was.

And now I don't feel the need to install from CD.

    Thanks!

I want to keep sum more "newbie-friendly" than "poweruser-friendly"...
More Gnome than Kde, if you know what I mean...
Still, I will think about it.

Okay, bumped to new version(sum_0.9-1_all.deb). Please try it out, and report any bugs you may find.
Also, you may want to backup your menu.lst if you have not done so already.

Same here! I lost my usplash a while back and this is the only thing that fixed it! I tried a lot of other ways described in this forum, too.

Thank you for this great tool!
