OK, heres my problem, ive installed a couple of games using the software center and i also installed the recordmydesktop app so I could record some game footage for youtube, however when I start recording the game window everything completely slows down and the game becomes unplayable, this also happens when I try to record with xvidcap.

I have ubuntu installed along side windows vista (using the wubi installer), I have no problems recording PC gameplay using camtasia. Here are my system specs.

Total amount of system memory 4.00 GB RAM
    Intel core 2 duo processor
Display adapter type ATI Radeon HD 2400 PRO
Total available graphics memory 1535 MB
    Dedicated graphics memory 128 MB
    Dedicated system memory 0 MB
    Shared system memory 1407 MB
    Display adapter driver version 8.612.0.0
    Primary monitor resolution 1024x768

the system info I got from vista as im not sure how to get sytem info like that on ubuntu.

I have installed/configured the third party driver for my ati card ( i think ).

What do I need to make game recording smooth? new graphics card or do i need a new driver?

    Thanks for your help.

This is completely normal. think of it this way, the game is being rendered and has fps, and the RMD is recording that as its being rendered at a certain amount of fps, so the graphics card is running double.

Apologies for this newbie question, but where exactly is the output file located? I know that it's been made and encoded, I just can't find it o_O.

At the bottow left corner of the program there is a "Select Window" button, click that, then click anywhere in the window you want to record. You can also go into the "advanced" dialogue box and in the Misc tab there is an option for selected recording windows to she the metacity, compiz, etc window border or not. Also I would recommend disabling the outline capture area on screen option when recording one select windows because somethimes the outline will show up on the recorded video. Hope this helps, happy recording!

As for converting to AVi, I'd go with Mencoder, or ffmpeg. Here is a good guide:

Does anyone know what would cause the CLI version of this app stop recording the audio after about 5-7min? It seems to do this about 50% of the time. I don't know if the GUI version does this or not as I can't get it to record properly. I really need an app to screencast up to 30min at a time with sound and this is the only one I've managed to have work at all.

How come I'm the only one it seems like that's having a problem getting it to encode? I've been sitting at 0% for about 2-3 minutes now. Recorded a 10-15 second video.
Been sitting at this for 15 minutes now...
    Code:
    alt0n@alt0n-linux:~$ recordmydesktop --quick-subsampling
Initial recording window is set to:
    X:0 Y:0 Width:1920 Height:1080
Adjusted recording window is set to:
    X:0 Y:4 Width:1920 Height:1072
Your window manager appears to be Compiz

    Detected compositing window manager.
Reverting to full screen capture at every frame.
To disable this check run with --no-wm-check
(though that is not advised, since it will probably produce faulty results).

    Initializing...
Buffer size adjusted to 4096 from 4096 frames.
    Opened PCM device default
Recording on device default is set to:
    1 channels at 22050Hz
    Capturing!
    ^C
