Talking New to Linux. Almost a full convert!

I've recently installed Hardy on my desktop. I was getting fed up of WXP being v e r y s l o w and crashing lots. My Bro is a long-term linux user and pointed me in the direction of Ubuntu.

At first, it was installed and little used, old habits and all that. I decided to make the leap and go for Ubuntu as my default use. I only went back to XP for specific software.

I've not used XP for days now (except at the moment cos I'm on a laptop which refuses to install Linux (GRRR!)). I'm really getting the hang of things with Ubuntu.

As a 'basic' user its dead easy, everything makes sense. It took me a while to get the PC to talk to my network storage device. Once that solved it was a matter of changing the shutdown order so it unmounted properly.

I'm enjoying learning, i'm enjoying using.

Overall, I'm positive about being a full convert!

don't be afraid to try another distro on your laptop. ubuntu isn't the only game in town. or even try ubuntu 8.10. it is only 9 days away from being final. another one to try is mandriva one. have fun.

If you post some info about your laptop and what exactly happens when you try to install Ubuntu, it's likely that you'll get some advice that will make the GRRR go away

    And welcome to Linux.

I agree with wolfen69, don't just stick with Ubuntu. It's great and all, but it's not the only fruit.

Heck, I started with Fedora Core 6, went onto OpenSuse, Mandriva, Mint, Zenwalk, Wolvix, Ubuntu, then back to Fedora 9. I'm happy now

I have started with Debian 2 years ago for my web server and today I ran my laptop with Kubuntu 8.04...
I like it and feel free, secure, robiust, and of course I really feel free from virus, trojan, and other malware...
More, I really feel a good feeling because no one will charge me about to use GNU/GPLed software...

if your laptop has vista use vista's own partition editor [search "reduce partition size"] to reduce the size of the main partition [DUH] then use "select largest unpartitioned space" during the install
OS upgrade with no hardware upgrade: $0.
having a smooth first install: ....priceless.

I've tried a handful of distro's on the laptop and they all hang during installation. I've googled quite a bit and I think its to do with the graphics card (an SIS Mirage 3).

I've got an old laptop with a knackered screen(but other than that fuly working) onto which I've installed Edubuntu and I've taken it to the the school where I work to use in class.

My next Ubuntu task is to get my surround sound working nicely!!
