Howto: ATI Mobility Beryl/XGL FGLRX in Edgy

Well i posted my problem on this forum but i haven't got a reply for 2 weeks so maybe you guys in this post can help me

Today instead of 8.34.8 i now have 8.35.8.
This driver also works fine except the weird glitch.
i suppose its a sync error, but the beryl options would not work great to solve this.
I have tried to install the open source radeon driver and uses aiglx but that went wrong so I sticked to xgl.

If i dont start XGL and just use a normal session the driver works great. Except for that damn amdcccle but via terminal everything works. No glitches or any weird behavior.
With XGL (beryl not loaded yet) i get a diagonal refresh line, when moving windows fast. (upper part is faster then lower part) or a rectangle. It aint slow only that line. with beryl i get it when doing some rotate actions like in the video.

Please help me, i loved beryl (used it fine on old mandriva installation)
Or tell me where i can find a good solution to use the radeon drivers and aiglx

keep in mind ati drivers >=8.29 no longer support the 9000 mobility family, among others. They may still work, but I am scared to try. I am using the edgy 8.28 drivers. Besides, 8.30 only has bugfixes, no new features. And I think the only feature of 8.29 is removed support (may be an incorrect statement). Give 8.28 a shot.

Can you offer directions on how to install the 8.28 drivers? My Beryl install stopped working after I got to the step where I restarted and tested flgrx. It would hang at about 97% on the Ubuntu splash screen with a double line of little misc colored objects just below the progress bar. I booted back into Recovery Mode and renamed xorg.conf to xorg.conf.bad, and xorg.conf.original back to xorg.conf, and that's where I am now.

BTW, I am doing this through VMware, as if this isn't tricky enough to start.

grab the ati driver installer from here:

That tells you how to install the latest fglrx, except you are going to have to use the 8.28 file from the ati site instead of the 8.35 one.

And the error I get about 10 seconds after logging in...I get booted right back to the login screen when I am done reading it.

Monitor+ati driver+ati screen
Monitor+fglrx driver+fglrx screen

I really doubt that using two drivers at the same time will work.

Also, you have not enabled bigdesktop anywhere in the file.

Used the method here for installing my ATI Drivers and simply enabled Bigdesktop in the ATI Control Center

I have this card with a Fiesty Fawn installation. Should I still use the 8.28 version of the fglrx drivers? If so how do I install them with aptitude, or will aptitude already instal the 8.28 version. I tried using the .run file to install but i would always get some sort of error. To solve this error I read i had to replace something about the symlink and bash and dash in edgy. I cant remember but if needed I can find all this information.

Mainly, I just need to know if the version of the driver I need has to be specifically 8.28 for FGLRX to work on my mobility 9000.

Hey zaxor0, this guide is no longer alive. You can use the restricted drivers manager to install fglx in feisty, then use "Desktop Effects" under System->Preferences to use Compiz (which is like beryl). If you want lots of effects, check out trevino's compiz fusion SVN repository (just search the forum for compiz fusion).
