Suggestion for renaming this forum

Hello,

@all

As you probably have noticed by yourself, there are a many threads in this forum that do not belong here. It seems that people tend to interpret the word 'accessibility' in a large sense; for example how to access specific hardware.

Consequently, it might be appropriate to rename this forum to make it more clearly related to assistive technology for disabled people.

henrik already suggested renaming the forum to 'Assistive Technology'.

Any other idea for a new name for the forum will be appropriated.

Yes I think 'Assistive Technology' might help. It it obvious to everyone what that means? Will someone who is looking for improved access features know that this is the right place? (just wondering)

I also think the subtitle could do with a change. It's currently:

Accessibility refers to software used primarily by people who are deaf, are mobility impaired, or have sight problems including colour blindness or dyslexia.

It's sort of a definition, but not a very good one (originally written by the forum staff).

Hope you don't mind me reviving this post. I am Deaf, and I never realised that this section of the forum was aimed at users like me. I've been a regular visitor to the Ubuntu Forums, and have posted questions about 'assistive technology' in the regular sections. So far I have been satisfied with most responses, but if this section was more accessible to those who need assistive technology, then we could get more specialised support.

I've met a few Deaf users here, but not sure if they know about this little corner of the forum. I'm for changing the name to 'Assistive Technology'

I never visited this forum before, and didn't really think about it, but I didn't recognize it as being for this purpose. A rename might be a good idea.

Out of curiosity, what differences are there for deaf or the hearing impaired on the computer?

I ask this, because I have no speakers and never realized my computer made noise until I installed Ubuntu on my laptop which has speakers. It really freaked me out when I booted it. I never felt restricted by having no sound. Is there a way to give flash videos subtitles?

I always watch movies with subtitles on, and it would be nice to have that online.

You might try to activate the "visual system beep" in the Sound preferences on your computer without speakers. May be there are also other features for hearing impaired,...

By the way, what is the procedure to get this forum renamed?

I don't like my computer making sounds...

Only the admins can do it. Post in the Forum Feedback and Help, and they will address. Post a link to this thread for them too.
