The word directory is used in computing and telephony meaning a repository or database of information. A directory, as opposed to a conventional database, is heavily optimized for reading, with the assumption that data updates are very rare compared to data reads. Commonly, a directory supports search and browsing in addition to simple lookups.Funny - this is something I must have missed during my English classes. I think I know what a "folder" is, but I have no idea what a "directory" might be in real life. I only use them as computer terminology.
