Exclamation PLEASE use the official upgrade method! (if you decide to upgrade)

Please, people; if you plan on upgrading to Feisty Fawn 7.04, use the OFFICIAL upgrade method:
Code:
$ gksu "update-manager -c"
Modifying your sources.list is unofficial, hacky, and can cause problems, as many users have experienced.

(Admins, can this be posted as a sticky? People need to see it...)

Re: PLEASE use the official upgrade method!

EXCEPT for Xubuntu...! Please read:
http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=285951

There is a critical bug when upgrading with the standard method fro Xubuntu:
https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu...ger/+bug/68027

Modifying the sources, etc. when following the instructions to upgrade is OK, BTW. It causes problems when you have external repos, etc.

Re: PLEASE use the official upgrade method!

How can you say that modifying your source list is unofficial, etc... when it's right here in the documentation?

I stickied this thread. If you decide to upgrade I recommend upgrading through :
Code:
$ gksu "update-manager -c"

Um ...
It seems that Kubuntu 6.06 does not have 'update-manager'. What to do?

Re: PLEASE use the official upgrade method! (if you decide to upgrade)

The problem is that the official method is not working at all, it just did nothing for me. And repository-upgrade, I already learned, is breaking dependencies.

I, kind of, used the other method, and now my system is broken: X does not find the required graphics drivers and neither my wireless card nor my ethernet card can access to the network.

When I log in on a virtual terminal, it looks like this:

Code:
laptop login: me
configuration error - unknown item 'FAIL_DELAY' (notify administrator)
Password:
Is there any way to revert the upgrade, or do I have to make a fresh install?

Edit: Problem solved. To activate the ethernet card do
sudo ifup eth0
After this you can use apt-get to install the missing graphics drivers:
sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-video-vesa
and then restart X:
sudo /etc/init.d/gdm restart

What does the update-manager do besides automatically changing your sources.list and performing a dist-upgrade?

~$ gksu "update-manager -c"
this method starts to work but only gets to 39 of 40 files and just hangs
