The Ubuntu Forums have grown tremendously over the years. While we regret that we are discontinuing our Other OS Talk category, this gives us an opportunity to help other Linux distributions grow by directing traffic to the websites of these distributions.

Here is a list of the official websites for the operating systems that used to have individual forums here. We hope you are able to find further assistance from there. And finally, if you haven't yet found what you are looking for, we suggest you look for information on the DistroWatch website or you might try the multi-distribution LinuxQuestions forum.

Suse - if 'she' were my girl I'd dump her

Welcome back to my computer Ubuntu

I feel like I have returned home again. This evening I tried Suse 10.2 alpha5 i386.... ARGGGGHH!!!

Is it just me, or have they completely f***** everything up... AGAIN?!

That stupid new KDE 'menu' as they like to call it - talk about "If it ain't broken, we are gonna fix it ANYHOW!" - must be their motto. And at THIS late in the day, my intel HDA soundcard STILL doesn't work - Ubuntu can do it and SO can Mandriva - what *IS* SUSE up to??.

And then... I go to set up AIGLX/XGL and it says my 915m card isn't in the XGL database?!

WTTTFFFFF?!!!!!!!!!!

I have aiglx working like a dream in Mandriva 2007 Powerpack - whattttt issss goinnng onnnn .

I know it is only an ALPHA but Novell are a BIG commercial company, and I would have thought they'd sorted it BY NOW.

Well done to Ubuntu and Mandriva for sorting out the HDA intel sound driver (ALSA) and the XGL / AIGLX

ESPECIALLY Ubuntu my favourite distro so far!!!
Just wish the Fat cat distros could learn from this.

If anyone knows what is going on, please, DO TELL!!

Not sure about the sound card, but my i915 doesn't work that well with XGL (though it DOES work) In all fairness, XGL != AIGLX. SuSE used to be good, but it seems to be getting worse at detecting my hardware as opposed to Ubuntu, which get better at it with each release.

Go figure.

Ah, the key word in the whole passage! I sense you have been bitten before? But you were so smitten that you gave her another chance, yes? You should not have been surprised the second time!

Re: Suse - if 'she' were my girl I'd dump her

I loaded Suse 10.1 on a computer I run Win2K3 server normally as a dual boot configuration. I had to run right out and buy a flea collar for it! What a dog. Now it's a Win2K3/Ubuntu Server 6.06 machine. Only other distro that I'v e seen lately that looks interesting is Sabayon. I may download it and give it a spin as a test but my distro of choice is Ubuntu and I don't see anything on the horizon that will change that.

I've moved this to Other OS Talk--a more appropriate place.

Re: Suse - if 'she' were my girl I'd dump her

Suse I feel is targeting the 'Office Drone' type person - interfaces made to look all TOO much like w1nd0z3... ARGH!!!

Is this heading in the direction of Linspire? I sure hope not, but all the same, Suse's version of grub had the utter indecency to screw up my mbr........ THANKS!!!

Now I got to reload OOBOONT RC -

Mandriva, for all its failings, at LEAST got sound detection and AIGLX setup "one click out-of-the-box" RIGHT!!!. Now if they would only refuse to include such trash as 'LinDVD' - I may grow to like them again. Not heard about the endless bugs of Mandriva 2007 yet?? The misconfigured servers that prevented PAYING USERS to download the Powerpack ISO when it came out??

PAH!!! - do a GOOOOOOGLE on it and be prepared for a shock

And guess what - it is STILL broken!!!!!!!!!

They are beyond belief!!

@ JayTee

Hey funny you should mention Sabayon
I had NEVER heard of it before, and yet downloaded it a week ago and livecd ran it. It sure looks pretty and creamy, but not as tasty as Ubuntu, but the look is following close behind.

The liveDVD 3.0 I have didn't seem to do any AIGLX ... do you know if it does??

I see we are on similair wavelengths!

Thanks

I cant wait for edgy+1 and the improved hardware detection that comes along with it.

unlokia, you have to enable it from the liveDVD

Re: Suse - if 'she' were my girl I'd dump her

I was reading this info on http://distrowatch.com and it looked pretty interesting to me. Problem is their bittorrent isn't working very well. I haven't been able to get a full download yet.

Quote:
Following the "miniEdition", the complete SabayonLinux 3.1 live DVD is now also out: "Announce: SabayonLinux x86/x86-64 3.1. New features: 2.6.18 kernel; added AIGLX Support (along with Xgl) thanks to Beryl and Emerald; NVIDIA drivers 1.0-9625, ATI drivers 8.29.6; improved graphics cards detection support; X.Org resolution auto-detection support; updated X.Org ATI drivers to 6.6.3 release; nvidia.ko and fglrx.ko are now linked at runtime; Intel and ATI X.Org drivers now work nicely with AIGLX; imported installer fixes from SVN." Read the rest of the release announcement for further information. The SabayonLinux 3.1 DVD images for x86 and x86_64 architectures are available for download via BitTorrent: SabayonLinux-x86-3.1 (3,350MB) or SabayonLinux-x86_64-3.1 (3,567MB).

Re: Suse - if 'she' were my girl I'd dump her

Having tried SUSE 10.0 and SUSE 10.1 i can tuthfully say SUSE combines the very worst of windows with almost nothing good from Linux. Slow, bloated, buggy, etc etc. You have to download 3.5 GB DVD (or the equivalent in CDs), it takes ages to install and ages to boot AND ages to shut down, it doesn't know any other repositories than the installation media by default, YaST is a crappy, buggy and sluggish replica of Control Panel from windows and so on and so forth. I wouldn't give it to my worst enemy. Period.
