Im running xubuntu with compiz fusion on my eeepc, runs a treat! Xubuntu is a version of ubuntu but instead of running the gnome desktop it uses xfce (which has a much smaller memory footprint)
get xubuntu:

ubuntu drivers for eeepc with great howto (you will need these wifi, graphics and more):

there is also eeeXubuntu http://wiki.eeeuser.com/ubuntu:eeexubuntu:home with all drivers already included.
True but i didn't like it. The wifi drivers were buggy and it was a bit of a large install for the 4GB ssd on my eee. Personally I did a network install (booting from a flash drive). I just installed the base system rebooted and installed the rest i needed via apt. Turned out a really small install only about 1GB and with the intel driver install scripts (posted above) it runs 10 times better than xandros even with compiz-fusion running.

eeeXubuntu runs absolutely fantastic on my eee 4g. Flash for firefox is a whole other story though.
I owned the oldest model of eeePC that only has 2Gb space (2gb Surf). I would like to use the original xandros OS than using the eeexubuntu because it has many issues (like codec, plug-in, drivers). The xandros OS can play mp3 and other multimedia files. Although xandros left me with 500mb or so of disk space I would leave it as is in my eeePC. Nonetheless, if you ask what my PC is having - it's UBUNTU Hardy Heron (8.04 LTS).
You should check out "easy peasy". Its basically the ubuntu netbook remix with eee pc fixes.

Hmmm...
I wiped out the Xandros installed "Easy Peasy". Easy Peasy is Ubuntu 8.10 specially made for the EEE PC. Everything works out of the box, I mean everything. You have to do the install with a flash drive, it is not that complicated. Read up on it and go for it.
I found a mini tutorial on how to install Ubuntu on the EEE PC.

Xandros is very limited and the asus repos are small and out of date. Try http://wiki.debian.org/DebianEeePC
