DSL is going to be lighter because it includes less stuff. Puppy is friendlier to new users than DSL, though, imo.

Boxpup uses Wbar, Openbox and Tint.

Puppy is great, once you accept the rather estoric way of looking for packages..., relying on ad-hoc contributions so post them in the forums.

I build my own packages for puppy. It is quite easy with the dev tools they got, dare I say almost as good as Arch (not quite, but almost ).

I used Puppy Linux ages ago but I preferred DSL (Damn Small Linux).

It's been a while, so I will give it another shot. I use DSL as my USB OS, but if Puppy has got a lot better since I last used it I might replace DSL with it.

Last time I checked, DSL was a LOT faster than Puppy Linux.

    Re: Puppy Linux: AMAZING.

I ran Puppy a couple of times as a live CD but never installed it.

A friend is running xubuntu on an 800MHz 250MB ram old computer. It's fine but a bit slow.

My question is, OK clearly Puppy will be faster, but will Firefox start faster in Puppy? Will OpenOffice start faster?

He really needs these two apps.

He's generally happy with it, but if you use a computer to browse the web, then sooner or later you're going to run onto a page with dozens of dancing hamsters and it will start grinding the gears.

i would say yes, since puppy loads completely into memory at boot.
