OK, after playing with stuff quite a bit and with a bit of help from a few people (you know who you are), I finally have my wife's setup the way she wants it and everything is running right.

    Here you go:

Seems there are issues with this and exaile...

Re: Post your .conkyrc files w/ screenshots

This morning I had problems connecting to these forums. Not whining about it as I think it's my ISP. Took about an hour or so, and then back to normal.

So what I would like to do if its possible is to:

Monitor line (connection?) speed, again not up/down rates

Monitor usage total, eg. 6.7Gb used / 12Gb limit from my ISP website

Can I get this happening, and if so a point in the right direction would be appreciated.

This is the kind of info I want to retrieve

    Peak Usage Summary
(as at Thursday 4th Dec at 2:10pm)
    Uploads: 256.49 MB
    Downloads: 4.47 GB
Usage: 4.72 GB (includes both upload and download data)
Full Days remaining in Period: 6

    Thanks

It is part of Japanese folklore. Its a Kyuubi, a nine tailed Kitsune. Kyuubi are the oldest, wisest, and most powerful of the Kitsune. I would recommend the Wikipedia page if you want to read up on them. They were stolen by Naruto to be used as one of their gods.

I'm not sure about monitoring available bandwidth. It'd probably take some scripting to interact with speedtest.net or a similar site. If you know of one that gives just text output, you could use curl to fetch that info and display it in conky.

As for the other stuff, you're looking for vnstat. You can install it with apt-get. All you have to do is set up the database for your selected interface and it will keep tabs on your internet usage for days, weeks, months, etc., as such:

Maybe it's not exactly what you're looking for, though, and you'd rather fetch the info straight from them. That could be done, I'm sure, but why use bandwidth to monitor bandwidth usage? If you know your imposed limits, just use vnstat to monitor it locally.

Let's just say that my ISP and I are no longer friends. "It's a Linux issue, and there known issues with Firefox as a web browser"

So, since they offer a service, I want to monitor that service

    I take it bandwidth='linespeed'?

I'm on wireless so there should be little reason not to have full bandwidth nearly all of the time?

vnstat I looked into today but is useless to me if I have nothing to reference it against...

Please feel free to correct my logic if I am off the mark here.

Thanks for your thoughts and suggestions.

    Cheers

Here's a page that has a list of almost 100 different speed test pages. One of them has to have a simple text output instead of fancy flash windows and graphs.
