    That's due to you copying it directly and not knowing what you were doing first. Open the file itself and READ it. There are requirements and some limited instructions that come with it. And had you read a few posts after he had posted it, you'd also see how frustrating it is to tell people this so often. Don't take shortcuts, and don't go straight for VinDSL's work as your first foray into Conky. There are instructions and requirements that come before you get to that phase.

    In the mean time, these links will help you to actually learn Conky so you can eventually get a Conky like VinDSL's.

    Conky Configuration Variables (Above the TEXT section.)
    Conky Objects (Below the TEXT section.)
    Conky Pitstop (Source for how-to-use scripts.)
    kaivalagi's weather script.
    kaivalagi's misc scripts.
    Other kaivalagi python scripts for use with Conky.

    And in while you're doing your homework, let me just say, don't expect to copy someone else's work and get it running without some work on your end. In every case, you have to make it your own, specific to your hardware, and there are no shortcuts. When you take what you perceive as a shortcut, you are in fact taking the hard way. It's counter-intuitive, but believe it or not Conky is very quick to learn, and extremely easy to configure once you learn. Just having someone else do the work will slow you down, and you will never learn that way. Though copying code is usually very easy and extremely informative in the learning process, VinDSL has a lot of advanced things he does that only the experienced Conky user knows how to recognize. It's all about spacing and requirements, but someone who just copies his work as a whole usually can't see these things, and proclaim it's "Not Working"... Yes... In those cases, I believe it isn't working. It's an issue called, affectionately, PEBKAC/UEOI. Or, Problem Exists Between Keyboard And Chair/User End Of Interface.

    Just read those links, have a look at the file you copied, and learn for yourself. We can help you with chunks, but you won't get the entire thing running until you understand some basics. If you don't know the basics, one or ten of us could be interacting with you over the course of several pages of this thread, and it still wouldn't get half done. So, for efficiency, sanity, and your own good, read the links and learn for yourself.

    To call the script in a conky, use, before TEXT
        lua_load /path/to/the/script/graph.lua
        lua_draw_hook_pre main_graph
    and add one line (blank or not) after TEXT

    Parameters are :
    3 parameters are mandatory
    name - the name of the conky variable to display,
                  for example for {$cpu cpu0}, just write name="cpu"
    arg - the argument of the above variable,
                  for example for {$cpu cpu1}, just write arg="cpu1"
                    arg can be a numerical value if name=""
    max - the maximum value the above variable can reach,
                  for example for {$cpu cpu1}, just write max=100 or less or more

    Optional parameters:
    x,y - coordinates of the bottom-left corner of the graph,
                  relative to the top-left corner of the conky window
                  default = bottom-left corner of the conky window
    width - width of the graph, default = 100 pixels
    height - height of the graph, default = 20 pixels
    nb_values - number of values to display in the graph, default=width
                  i.e. 1 pixel for 1 value
    autoscale - if set to true, calculate the max valeu of the y axis and
                  doesn't use the max parameter above, default=false
    skew_x      - skew graph around x axis, défaut = 0
    skew_y      - skew graph around y axis, défaut = 0
    angle - angle of rotation of the graph in degress, default = 0
                  i.e. a horizontal graph)
    inverse - if set to true, graph are draw from right to left, default=false
    background - if set to false, background is not drawn, default=true
    foreground - if set to false, foreground is not drawn, default=true
                  foreground = plain graph
    bg_bd_size - size of the border of the background, default=0=no border
    fg_bd_size - size of the border of the foreground, default=0=no border

    Colours tables below are defined into braces :
    {position in the gradient (0 to 1), colour in hexadecimal, alpha (0 to 1)}
    example for a single colour table :
    {{0,0xFFAA00,1}} position parameter doesn't matter
    example for a two-colours table :
    {{0,0xFFAA00,1},{1,0x00AA00,1}} or {{0.5,0xFFAA00,1},{1,0x00AA00,1}}
    example for a three-colours table :
    {{0,0xFFAA00,1},{0.5,0xFF0000,1},{1,0x00AA00,1}}

    bg_colour - colour table for background,
                  default = {{0,0x000000,.5},{1,0xFFFFFF,.5}}
    fg_colour - colour table for foreground,
                  default = {{0,0x00FFFF,1},{1,0x0000FF,1}}
    bg_bd_colour- colour table for background border,
                  default = {{1,0xFFFFFF,1}}
    fg_bd_colour- colour table for foreground border,
                  default = {{1,0xFFFF00,1}}

    bg_orientation, bg_bd_orientation, fg_orientation, fg_bd_orientation,
                - "orientation" defines the starting point of the gradient,
                  default="nn"
                  there are 8 available starting points :
                  "nw","nn","ne","ee","se","ss","sw","ww"
                  (n for north, w for west ...)
                  theses 8 points are the 4 corners + the 4 middles of graph
                  so a gradient "nn" will go from "nn" to "ss"
                  a gradient "nw" will go from "nw" to "se"

    draw_me - if set to false, graph is not drawn (default = true)
                  it can be used with a conky string, if the string returns 1, the graph is drawn :
                  example : "${if_empty ${wireless_essid wlan0}}${else}1$endif",

    First graph on the top-left corner is a conky graph, others are Lua graphs.

    Set the path to the Lua script in the conky (in the above TEXT section) and change the variables in the Lua script. This one is not very easy to set up but if you follow the instructions on my blog, I think you can manage it (well, I hope ) !

    Last version of the script with README is on my deviantArt page.

    HTH and feel free to ask if you have any problem

    EDIT : changing a parameter in the Lua script needs a restart of the conky, it's why I set the update interval to 0.1 second for the tests ! In a normal use, 1 second interval is OK.
    I attached a screenshot of what I've got, how do I stop it from having it's own window? with a bar up top and everything?
    I've looked on his blog and I'm not seeing how to get the non .lua part to do what it's traditionally done.

    Code:
    # -- Conky settings -- #

    lua_draw_hook_pre main_graph
    TEXT

    ${downspeedgraph eth0 26,257 555752 FF0000}
    another problem is where do I put the ## Text alignment. in there? I've tried copying and pasting some code from other conky's in, when I did get the lua working it always defaulted to the top left where I didn't want it, and my ## Text alignment. must have been in the wrong place cause it wasn't working, when it was going where I wanted it the lua wasn't working

    so for now can anyone advise on how to make it go back to the desktop like normal? not be it's own moveable window.

    nevermind, I see the alignment tl part now, still having trouble getting it to be it on the desktop, I changed own_window yes to no, and that made it draw over every single part of the desktop?

    ok, I solved that problem to, now my only problem is that when I make a change to the conky and save it, not the lua, but the host conky, it won't fetch the graph from the .lua file, the only way to get it all back is to kill the conky and start it again?
    the lua that makes my CPU bars don't do that, they always come back.

    yes, with this Lua script, you have to restart the conky. Use a terminal and run
    Code:
    conky -c /path/conky
    When you make a change to the conky, stop the conky with Ctrl + C in the terminal and start it again (with Up key in the terminal).

    ok I've nearly got it all sorted, here's the code I've changed the lua to.
    Code:
    --[[ GRAPH widget v1.1 by wlourf (07.01.2011)
        this widget draws some graphs with some effects
        http://u-scripts.blogspot.com/2010/10/graph-widget.html

    Optional parameters:
    x,y - coordinates of the bottom-left corner of the graph,
                  relative to the top-left corner of the conky window
                  default = bottom-left corner of the conky window
    width - width of the graph, default = 100 pixels
    height - height of the graph, default = 20 pixels
    nb_values - number of values to display in the graph, default=width
                  i.e. 1 pixel for 1 value
    autoscale - if set to true, calculate the max valeu of the y axis and
                  doesn't use the max parameter above, default=false
    skew_x      - skew graph around x axis, défaut = 0
    skew_y      - skew graph around y axis, défaut = 0
    angle - angle of rotation of the graph in degress, default = 0
                  i.e. a horizontal graph)
    inverse - if set to true, graph are draw from right to left, default=false
    background - if set to false, background is not drawn, default=true
    foreground - if set to false, foreground is not drawn, default=true
                  foreground = plain graph
    bg_bd_size - size of the border of the background, default=0=no border
    fg_bd_size - size of the border of the foreground, default=0=no border

    Colours tables below are defined into braces :
    {position in the gradient (0 to 1), colour in hexadecimal, alpha (0 to 1)}
    example for a single colour table :
    {{0,0xFFAA00,1}} position parameter doesn't matter
    example for a two-colours table :
    {{0,0xFFAA00,1},{1,0x00AA00,1}} or {{0.5,0xFFAA00,1},{1,0x00AA00,1}}
    example for a three-colours table :
    {{0,0xFFAA00,1},{0.5,0xFF0000,1},{1,0x00AA00,1}}

    bg_colour - colour table for background,
                  default = {{0,0x000000,.5},{1,0xFFFFFF,.5}}
    fg_colour - colour table for foreground,
                  default = {{0,0x00FFFF,1},{1,0x0000FF,1}}
    bg_bd_colour- colour table for background border,
                  default = {{1,0xFFFFFF,1}}
    fg_bd_colour- colour table for foreground border,
                  default = {{1,0xFFFF00,1}}

    bg_orientation, bg_bd_orientation, fg_orientation, fg_bd_orientation,
                - "orientation" defines the starting point of the gradient,
                  default="nn"
                  there are 8 available starting points :
                  "nw","nn","ne","ee","se","ss","sw","ww"
                  (n for north, w for west ...)
                  theses 8 points are the 4 corners + the 4 middles of graph
                  so a gradient "nn" will go from "nn" to "ss"
                  a gradient "nw" will go from "nw" to "se"

    draw_me - if set to false, graph is not drawn (default = true)
                  it can be used with a conky string, if the string returns 1, the graph is drawn :
                  example : "${if_empty ${wireless_essid wlan0}}${else}1$endif",

    v1.0 (31/10/2010) original release
    v1.1 (07/01/2011) Add draw_me parameter and correct memory leaks, thanks to "Creamy Goodness"

    what I was wanting to do was have the horizontal graphs be longterm, say an hour, and the vertical ones be much shorter, about 5 mins, is that possible?
    I experimented with adding to the max value, but that had no effect.

    sorry to waste this forums bytes, but I found how to do the border in your blog, so I'm all done, I'll post what I've done if anyone wants it when it's out of beta.
