It's a pity that I can't find a way to harness conky to display it though. In the mean time I just run the Disk Utility daily to keep an eye on their general health.
That is indeed news I have not yet read about. It is true, my Xystec SATA-USB station works out of the box, Vendor=13fd ProdID=1240 Rev= 1.04, though my PATA-USB does not, Vendor=05e3 ProdID=0702 Rev= 0.33
I found that smartctl partly supports usb since v3.39 and depends on hardware developer information, so this is a brand new developement and usb support might grow when time goes by. Inform yourself by googling: usb smartmontools

Before I do anything stupid, I'm doing a data dump. (Yet another reason to have this thread in the support forum. It's a BACKUP OF OUR WORK!)

I agree with everything you're saying, I just think it's a shame that python couldn't have more of a tighter coupling with conky like Lua has so it could work with conky variable values too...

Okay, there's only one thing I don't understand about what you're saying. How much more integral do you want it? Like, loading the script before the text section, and letting the script itself do the positioning, and being able to call those scripts, passing them variables directly out of conky tags? That kind of thing?

I'm not a programmer so I'm not sure what you mean. In both cases of Lua and Python, Conky loads them and uses them in a heartbeat. The lua_load section before TEXT in Conky, or through the exec tags for Python.

Your python scripts are in the same amount of demand, if not more, than the lua scripts done by the lua guys here. In fact in most cases they're side by side without conflict with eachother. In fact Conky limits your ability to use more than 1 Lua script at a time, a limitation it doesn't have for Python through the exec calls. Conky just loads them. Is there something you could do with python code in the Conky interpreter that loading a python script in the exec tag can't? I genuinely don't know. My programming skills died in College, so I don't understand what you mean, exactly. I see Conky doing just fine with your scripts as they are, with a hell of a lot of customization. When I hear you, of all people on this forum, feel you can do more "If Only"... it kinda blows my mind. It's hard to fathom, to be honest.

should i purge conky and install conky-all?
You have Cairo and LUA there, your should be fine, if you do upgrade do not get conky 1.8.1, stay with v1.8.0 for a while. 1.8.1 has a few "features" you may not like.

If you try a script and it doesn't work 1.8.0 is for you!

That kind of thing?

If I could load python in the way Lua is loaded in conky now I could work with all the variable values you can work with in a conky config file, it would just mean I could totally integrate functionality into conky easier and more tightly.

The one exec thing would be a problem with things as they are but it's totally overcome-able, you would need one "master" starting python script which could take others in as plugins just like I did with gtk-desktop-info (which I may start on again soon if I can find the time...)

Tis a shame but hey ho....desktop info may be what I need to concentrate on rather than the conky scripts as it runs (or did, probably broken now due to library changes) using html/javascript and uses webkit to render on the desktop window (albiet not as well as the X windows method used by conky thanks to it being written in C...

Okay, now I understand. It's an EFFICIENCY thing. It's not something you can or can't do, it's that you could do it better. Okay. I get that. Thank you for explaining!

Sorry to be so long winded about it. I really don't get programming anymore. I'm good at most things technical, but programming mentality just went bye-bye when I learned C++ in College. My brain said "What? ANOTHER language? How many is that now? 10 in 3 years? I'm not doing this anymore. LET'S BUILD STUFF AND TROUBLESHOOT INSTEAD!" And I have only ever been able to navigate other people's code ever since. So I appreciate the insight!

    Ditto, it looks pretty rad.

i went with a very similar color scheme here

although the black on green wasnt originally my idea ...
it was mr cogburn over on the #! forum http://crunchbanglinux.org/forums/post/102129/#p102129

green on black just looks classy... although once i had had my fun with those scripts the green became a bit much for other projects
