    Agreed!

I resisted Ubu for years, because I hated the Orange/Brown combo.

The 'dirty' colors made it look n' feel dirty. I felt like taking a shower, every time I used it...

9.04 changed all of that for me. I like the underpinnings (of the OS) so much, I decided to skin Ubu with my own custom theme, and that made it livable.

Conky is the icing on the cake!

Also, Kate has a search and replace function and multiple levels of undo and redo.

    for more info see here.
Gedit has no "colour-coded" language function for a "conkyrc" file but it has one you can add: at Conky PitStop Conky Lang and there you have it. I'm not fussy on that "passionate-pink" ... I should edit that out

I wonder if it works in Geany too?

And I do believe you are right Crinos512, every time I save a conky file, using Mousepad, Gedit or Geany it refreshes.

Ooh, that's pretty nice! I wonder if there's one for emacs? Every time I save a conky file with nano and gedit it refreshes too. Conky doesn't refresh when I save with emacs though.

Right... Stupid question I can't find an answer to again... can you just run an underline to a font? Or do you have to play with horizontal rules and positioning for that?

Oh, and I found the autosave/update thing only started when I added the PPA for the ConkyForecast package. So on that one, I will admit is likely the result of a new version of Conky getting installed on my system rather than the text editor. I went quiet on it to go back and look for an answer. (And, y'know, sleep.) Without the PPA, the version of Conky is 1.7.1 on the regular Ubuntu/Variants repositories. That resolved that.

As to KDevelop, it's not strictly an IDE. Since it's slightly different on systems outside of KDE. It runs slightly slower, or faster, if at all, when outside it's natural environment. IDE stands for INDEPENDENT Development Environment. So, I'm referring to the ones that are platform-independent being the same regardless of where they, themselves, are installed, and the native editors being different from their fellow native editors. I'm not talking about using, say, Eclipse on Gnome, and KDevelop on KDE, and calling THEM the same. They're not. But Arachnophillia, or even the standard JDE are the same on KDE as they are in Gnome, Windows, XFCE4, Enlightenment, or even Mac. Just to clarify, since it seems to have been taken so far out of the context I was referring to. If I was to over simplify, I would have to say recommending GEdit to people who were using anything other than Gnome, Kate to anyone not using KDE, or Mousepad to anyone not using XFCE4 is the same result. Unwise. They differ in function to eachother.

You can say "Text Editor" all you want, but you still have to be aware that not everyone uses the same one, and therefore can't say they all do what yours does. And I know that's dangerous talk on a Linux forum, considering that the war between Vi and Emacs has been going on... what... 20 years straight? So it comes down to your own preferences, rather than whether or not one is superior to the rest. Isn't that what Linux is about? Choice? The reason we got rid of that commercial crap from the big two companies, trying to make us all pay to use their software?

Interesting conversation to have with you guys though! Don't assume I say any of this defensively! I just type fast, therefore I can type a lot.

I had thought they were Integrated Development Envionments, in that they were editors, troubleshooters (ala lint), and compilers all in one. Not a big deal really, like I said before there are many paths to Conky Awesomeness!

I don't personally take it that way at all... and I welcome the open exchange of ideas.

    Yes, it does.

Edit: clean install of Aptosid is complete, time to get conky up and running.

Ah the wonders of the many abreviations of the tech industries. It is, in fact, both. The ones that can code multiple languages, and are independent of what system they're on, are called Independent Development Environment, whereas the concept of a visual environment for entering code and development of software via one language or another are generally known as Integrated Development Environment. Somewhere along the lines the little independent ones dropped one of the I's in the title for ease of use, and to distinguish themselves against the larger, paid/subscription suites that are released by the big industry designers.

Strictly speaking, if you want to know the difference, you put the I back in. Then you realize that there is a difference between the KDE Integrated Development Environment known as KDevelop, and the many Independent Integrated Development Environments such as Arachnophillia and Eclipse. There's one I recommended to a friend of mine who is learning Ruby for the first time, and couldn't install the standard Ruby IDE, so I pointed him to a free one known as RDE. It isn't specifically the one the industry uses, but it's free, independent, and it develops specifically for Ruby. So that one is an IRDE, KDevelop is a KIDE, and the others are technically IIDE. And then it gets confusing
