however just install conky-all and let the system take care of the conky package.

There are very few occasions you need to reboot. Installing software is not generally one of them. So it should not have crashed IMO

Oh.. and welcome to conky, having no more free time and the sudden onset of gray hair
Well, thanks for the help, but I'm going to give up for now.

Removing, reinstalling, rebooting, conky-all, etc, nothing will stop the error.

But it does look very cool.

    OK, so sudo apt-get install conky-all ?

Do I have to remove conky first? If so, how is that done?
    You could do a:
    Code:
    sudo apt-get remove conky;sudo apt-get install conky-all
to be safe but I think the last half would be just fine.

To see the "manual" for apt-get (or any command):

    Code:
    man apt-get
    or

    Code:
    man command
and if online at the time, there is always the Man Pages.

    Is this new for;
    • a bash script,
    • conky v1.8.0 or
    • a Debian thing

because it worked fine with Ubuntu 9.04.01
Must be a Statler thing - different version of BASH maybe.
I have Ubuntu for 4 years right now and echo allways needed "-e" for escape characters, at least I can tell for versions since Ubuntu 6.10 to today.

If you had read closer you would have seen that it was working with Ubuntu 9.04 before I switched to Debian, and I'm still duel booting with with 9.04.

Oh well, at least it's working.

I know its calling a bit of info (see attachment) but is there any way to reduce this?
    script
I'm afraid there is no way to reduce that, gradient effects use some cpu :
try to remove gradient effect on text with font_color=nil and maybe if you increase update_interval ...

Brilliant! Spent all last night wading through this thread and I have my first conky!

Take a peek: (The big gap under "TEXT" is to make room for the clock which is actually a widget)
