I want to use the output in the status bar of scrotwm. For now, I discovered that I can use the "out_to_x no" and "out_to_console yes" configuration to actually use conky on the status bar. Don't get the color though; probably need dzen2 for that.

    Thanks for the link.

    Code:
    out_to_x no
    out_to_console yes
    update_interval 1.0
    total_run_times 0
    use_spacer none

why not just use conky itself with the own_window_type panel?

The conky panel size matches the screen resoultion and gets resized during tiling. Not sure if a panel can be set to float and then placed at some fixed point on the screen.

Edit: yes, panels can be set to float in the "quirk" section of the .scrotwm.conf. All the conky settings like screen position are honored as well as the fonts and degree symbols; but the CPU ramps up to 100% and stays there. Bottom conky is the conky panel.

Re: Post your .conkyrc files w/ screenshots

I need to be able to have conky reload its config file via a command from the terminal.

    Here's a description of the problem/attempted-solutions so far: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1496860

    Any help is greatly appreciated.

SnickerSnack, your root reason is so that the conky window will remain transparent (as opposed to having a rotated chunk of wallpaper as a back ground), correct?

Actually, it ends up with a black background as in this screenshot:

    http://i306.photobucket.com/albums/n...otateWrong.png

I think that's because it tries to grab the image from the right side of a 1024x768 region, but since the screen is rotated to 768x1024 all it gets is black (since that's the default solid bg color).

But, yes, I want the conky window to look as though it is transparent (even though it isn't, it just normally grabs the proper chunk of the current background so that it blends in).

I can get it to do what I want by forcing conky to reload its config file (either by passing it SIGUSR1 or by restarting it manually), but that leads to other problems.

But, if I'm misunderstanding you and there is actually a way to have conky have a truly transparent background, an alpha layer, then I'm all ears..er...eyes.

Thumbs down Re: Post your .conkyrc files w/ screenshots

    Conky 1.8.0
"Conky now supports 'true' transparency by way of ARGB visuals in Xorg. This can be enabled by using a window manager that supports Xorg compositing. The own_window_argb_visual, own_window_argb_value, and own_window_transparent config settings can then be used to adjust accordingly."
Meaning the background should change when you change it... heck I can see Icons through mine

You can get 1.8.0 in the repos for Jaunty or newer as conky_all

Here's the relevent chunk of my conky.
    Code:
    own_window yes
    own_window_argb_visual yes
    own_window_argb_value 100
    own_window_colour 000000 # Black
    own_window_hints undecorated,below,sticky,skip_taskbar,skip_pager
    own_window_transparent yes
    own_window_type normal
