I also got the whole "Unknown Symbol"... I've tried everything to appending escape chars to the module and everything. Still didn't work. So I went to rasta geek's website and followed the module assistant method. It goes like this:

    Code:
    sudo apt-get update
    sudo apt-get install ov51x-jpeg-source module-assistant
    sudo module-assistant -t a-i ov51x-jpeg
Or you could try my method.
    Code:
    wget http://www.rastageeks.org/downloads/ov51x-jpeg/ov51x-jpeg-1.5.7.tar.gz
    tar xvf ov51x-jpeg-1.5.7.tar.gz
    sudo make install
    sudo modprobe videodev
    sudo modprobe i2c-core
    sudo insmod /lib/modules/`uname -r`/extra/ov51x-jpeg.ko
That should work.. if worse comes to worse type:
    Code:
    sudo modprobe ov51x-jpeg
    best of luck.

heres what I get in terminal

    matthew@matthew-desktop:~$ sudo apt-get install build-essential linux-headers-'matthew-r'

    That should be `uname -r` not 'matthew-r'
uname -r is a command which gives back your kernel version, and the backticks (or grave quotes, not single quotes) get it executed & replaced in the command.

It's moved on a few versions.
Look at the folder to see what is there:
    http://www.rastageeks.org/downloads/ov51x-jpeg/
    The current version is now:
    http://www.rastageeks.org/downloads/...g-1.5.8.tar.gz

To rehash this, mine worked fine until a reboot, now it "works" except that it gives me nothing but neon colors when viewed.

    Any ideas?

Go to System --> Administration --> Hardware Drivers

Disable "ov51x USB Camera Driver, and then restart the computer if it says "Requires system restart".

Go back to Hardware Drivers and enable "ov51x USB Camera Driver" and go back to XawTV to see if it worked.

If it didn't work for you, Go to System --> Administration --> Synaptic Package Manager and search "ov51x" and install the "ov51x-jpeg-source" package, and then disable "ov51x USB Camera Driver" (and restart the computer if required) and enable it again. At least that's what I did...
