that's my howto on using checkinstall... which is nice and easy to make .deb packages

I'd have to say, the outlined procedure is _QUITE_ simple, they even walk you through making one. The process can virtually be cut-and-pasted for any source package, and does not appear any more complicated than checkinstall.

Note that checkinstall isn't perfect; It doesn't handle symlinks properly (they appear to be stripped in the process)
