    I'm running:
    Ubuntu Breezy 5.10 - 2.6.12-10-386 #1 Mon Jan 16 17:18:08 UTC 2006 GNU/Linux

Here is the error I'm receiving during the "make":
    Code:
    keldrum@k9:~/ieee80211-1.0.3$ make
Checking in /lib/modules/2.6.12-10-386/build/ for ieee80211 components...

    make[1]: Leaving directory `/usr/src/linux-headers-2.6.12-10-386'
    make: *** [modules] Error 2
It looks to me (in my very limited knowledge) like it's giving the wrong gcc version number during this section:

    Code:
    /usr/src/linux-headers-2.6.12-1-386/scripts/gcc-version.sh: line 11: gcc-3.4: command not found
    /usr/src/linux-headers-2.6.12-10-386/scripts/gcc-version.sh: line 12: gcc-3.4: command not found
    make[1]: gcc-3.4: Command not found
I tried running that script individually and it reports an error on exit:
    Code:
    keldrum@k9:/usr/src/linux-headers-2.6.12-10-386/scripts$ sh gcc-version.sh
    gcc-version.sh: line 11: -E: command not found
    gcc-version.sh: line 12: -E: command not found
    0000
I checked in synaptic and it reports gcc as version# 4:4.0.1-3 (breezy). Should I try the newest versions of the ieee80211 subsystem and ipw2200 driver? I though that sticking to the versions numbers listed in the how to may avoid some potential problems.

    I would appreciate any ideas.

    Thanks!
I had this same problem. I just installed the version of gcc it used and it seemed to fix the problem:

    Code:
    sudo apt-get install gcc-3.4
    Hope it helps.

This is so frustrating. So, I have Breezy. I have all the prerequisites that have been mentioned so far, and a number that have not: build-essentials, the headers, gcc 3.4, open ssl. I am following Rick Knight's instructions. I get no errors when I run make install, but when I try to load the new modules, I get:

not sure if one should go outside of the ubuntu way in order to secure a wifi network???? are you mad?

Unfortunately the thing with linux distros is that they can never be up to date, they are always trying to catch up with the latest drivers and features as they are trying to please the greatest range of hardware.

For an individual who has only one set of hardware to look after, this kind of stepping outside of the distro package system is necessary.

Being able to download and compile your own programs is what linux is about.

    Re: HOWTO: ipw2200 + wpa

    Hello,
First time post...long time voyeur. Anywho, I followed luca's howto and now eth1 is nowhere to be found, either with iwconfig or Network Manager. I started the howto in attempt to configure my Dell Inspiron 9300 with Intel 2915 abg to work on my WPA2 Personal home network. Being a noob, I am not sure on the next plan of attack. How could I undo what was done with the howto. Also where would I go from here to get it configured?

    Thanks

    E

    Re: HOWTO: ipw2200 + wpa

Does this work for 5.10? I did a fresh 5.10 install with the server option. I managed to make and install the IEEE80211 by addng gcc-3.4 and manually removing an existing IEEE80211 folder with "sudo rm -ir /lib/modules/2.6.12-9-386/build/include/IEEE80211"

So I went on to make install ipw2200 driver and received the following errors.

    Code:

My two week linux experience tells me that linux is actually pretty straight forward, but this whole compile driver/kernel from source thing could drive a linux noob insane... I'll wait for your updated howto if you still plan on making it. Thanks

Don't forget to copy firmware to your hotplug's firmware directory and have the
    hotplug tools in place.
    See INSTALL for more information.
actually it's a warning so i don't really know if it matters or not..
