I figured, I don't want WPA but it looks like I can upgrade my firmware and ieee80211 subsystem and hope that fixes my problems. Well, I went through the process and it broke my wireless. On reboot my wireless (Eth1) doesn't show up and if I double click my 'Network Connection' icon I get a "No such device" error. I repeated the process to no avail.
Well, after some hair pulling and trial and troubleshooting I managed to get it working. A 'dmesg' had a spew of errors for iee80211 so I repeated the process using ieee80211-1.1.8 instead of ieee80211-1.1.9. I used the process here...

    http://doc.gwos.org/index.php/Install_ipw2200

It appears to be very similar to the initial post so it probably was just using the 1.1.8 instead of 1.1.9. Just thought I'd mention it.

    Bennettg,

    Glad you've got it working.

Luca_linux's howto is a good, accurate howto, the problems with wifi on breezy seem to be due to cjanges the debian folks made to things like wpasupplicant. In my howto, I try to address those changes. Also, startup order can be critical. SOme things just need to be loaded before others. The main thing is, you got it working! If the occaisional drops become a problem, take a look at the ipw2200 developers forum. It seems to be a pretty common proble.

    Re: HOWTO: ipw2200 + wpa

Does installing the firmware actually update anything on the hardware itself, such as a flash ROM? And if so, is the firmware compat with Windows?

Just curious. Perhaps I'm missing something obvious here.

    Re: HOWTO: ipw2200 + wpa

Apparently I'm struggling with something more fundamental. I can't get past this:

    root@lucky:/var/tmp/ipw2200/ieee80211-1.1.8# make install
    make -C /lib/modules/2.6.12-10-386/build M=/var/tmp/ipw2200/ieee80211-1.1.8 MODVERDIR=/var/tmp/ipw2200/ieee80211-1.1.8 modules
make: *** /lib/modules/2.6.12-10-386/build: No such file or directory. Stop.
    make: *** [modules] Error 2

    Help?

    Thanks,

    Re: HOWTO: ipw2200 + wpa

i've seen a lot ppl asking the same question but noone seems to give the answer. After having followed the guide and trying to make the ieee80211 file i get the:

Checking in /lib/modules/2.6.12-10-386/build/ for ieee80211 components...

find: /lib/modules/2.6.12-10-386/build/: No such file or directory
grep: /lib/modules/2.6.12-10-386/build//.config: No such file or directory
grep: /lib/modules/2.6.12-10-386/build//include/linux/autoconf.h: No such file or directory
    make -C /lib/modules/2.6.12-10-386/build M=/home/<myname>/tmp/ieee/ieee80211-1.0.3 MODVERDIR=/home/<myname>/tmp/ieee/ieee80211-1.0.3 modules
make: *** /lib/modules/2.6.12-10-386/build: No such file or directory. Stop.
    make: *** [modules] Error 2

I do confess to being a ubuntu/linux noob but i am hoping someone can hekp me get rid of the problem.

Thanks for all the help upfront.

    Re: HOWTO: ipw2200 + wpa

I solved the "problem". More a lack of brain activity. The reason why ppl get the 'make' error following this guide is because the linus-header files doesnt match your kernel version. In my case i searched repositories/google and found the linux-headers-2.6.12-10_2.6.12-10.26_i386.deb and linux-headers-2.6.12-10-386_2.6.12-10.26_i386.

It will solve your problem as long as your headers match the kernel version. Also note that the first file i listed above has to be installed first.
In case you dont know how to install debian files, open your terminal window and type:

    sudo dpkg -i package_file.deb

I got the same problem here. I've installed the linux-header. Now, how do I make the symlink?? Thanks

    Re: HOWTO: ipw2200 + wpa

    Hi guys.
Sorry, I haven't been on the forum for awhile, a long while.
    Now I am.
I think I'll update my HowTo within the next 2 days.
Anyway, here's a tip: if you want to get ipw2200 and WPA to work on a system running kernel >= 2.6.13, you'll need to change the driver interface in wpa_supplicant from "ipw" to "wext".

    Re: HOWTO: ipw2200 + wpa

    Hi All,

I'm stepping through Luca's how to but I'm having trouble when it comes to the ieee80211-1.0.3 make process & it exits with error2 (see below). It seems that it may be related to the make command getting an incorrect gcc number.

    I'm running:
    Ubuntu Breezy 5.10 - 2.6.12-10-386 #1 Mon Jan 16 17:18:08 UTC 2006 GNU/Linux

Here is the error I'm receiving during the "make":
    Code:
    keldrum@k9:~/ieee80211-1.0.3$ make
Checking in /lib/modules/2.6.12-10-386/build/ for ieee80211 components...
    make -C /lib/modules/2.6.12-10-386/build M=/home/keldrum/ieee80211-1.0.3 MODVERDIR=/home/keldrum/ieee80211-1.0.3 modules
    /usr/src/linux-headers-2.6.12-10-386/scripts/gcc-version.sh: line 11: gcc-3.4: command not found
    /usr/src/linux-headers-2.6.12-10-386/scripts/gcc-version.sh: line 12: gcc-3.4: command not found
    make[1]: gcc-3.4: Command not found
    make[1]: Entering directory `/usr/src/linux-headers-2.6.12-10-386'
      CC [M] /home/keldrum/ieee80211-1.0.3/ieee80211_module.o
    /bin/sh: gcc-3.4: command not found
    make[2]: *** [/home/keldrum/ieee80211-1.0.3/ieee80211_module.o] Error 127
    make[1]: *** [_module_/home/keldrum/ieee80211-1.0.3] Error 2
    make[1]: Leaving directory `/usr/src/linux-headers-2.6.12-10-386'
    make: *** [modules] Error 2
It looks to me (in my very limited knowledge) like it's giving the wrong gcc version number during this section:

    Code:
    /usr/src/linux-headers-2.6.12-1-386/scripts/gcc-version.sh: line 11: gcc-3.4: command not found
    /usr/src/linux-headers-2.6.12-10-386/scripts/gcc-version.sh: line 12: gcc-3.4: command not found
    make[1]: gcc-3.4: Command not found
I tried running that script individually and it reports an error on exit:
    Code:
    keldrum@k9:/usr/src/linux-headers-2.6.12-10-386/scripts$ sh gcc-version.sh
    gcc-version.sh: line 11: -E: command not found
    gcc-version.sh: line 12: -E: command not found
    0000
I checked in synaptic and it reports gcc as version# 4:4.0.1-3 (breezy). Should I try the newest versions of the ieee80211 subsystem and ipw2200 driver? I though that sticking to the versions numbers listed in the how to may avoid some potential problems.

    I would appreciate any ideas.

    Thanks!
