Ubuntu becoming -too- mainstream?

We all use Ubuntu. Every third article on digg is about Ubuntu. You see more and more people using this OS.
One might think this is a good thing. More people on the forums to help others, bigger chances of getting support, more apps and repositories, how-tos etc.

I've started my full-time Linux experience with Ubuntu. Everyone on digg was talking about it, so I got a VMware image and tried it. Then installed it. And never looked back to Windoze. I've been using other distros before, but never was as dedicated to make the switch like I was this June. Basicly, all the heavier knowledge I managed to gather came from using this distro, I'm tweaking every part of the system now, be it using rpms like they're normal debs, Having a link to sudo nautilus /etc on my desktop, a huge sources.list with almost 400 repos which gives me 23k packages, /usr/local/bin with hundreds of small programs i found somewhere and compiled myself, ...
But I'm, beginnning to doubt that Ubuntu is for me anymore.
Yes, without all you people creating repos, writing how-tos and helping on the forums, I would've had a MUCH harder time accomplishing all that. But there are too many people using Ubuntu. I don't like mainstream at all, I don't like Windoze, nor Mac, nor game consoles. I want something only few people have: Linux. My first choice was Ubuntu, which probably was a good thing. But seriously, it's becoming mainstream now. It's the most used Linux distro, and I don't like that. And soon, you probably will have problems, too.
Hackers will start targeting Linux, too if they see more and more people using Linux/Ubuntu. It takes one careless user, a poisened repository or some serious security bug that doesn't get fixed quick enough to invade a system. Sure, it's unlikely that this will happen, but what if Linux get's 20% marketshare in a few years? hackers will start targeting Linux user, too. They will target Ubuntu users. That, and the fact that I hate mainstream, will eventually to me getting another distro.

Also, apparently there are many Ubuntu people on digg, digging every story with Ubuntu in it's name. This is pissing other people off. Others start talking about this distro as being not "1337" enough, calling Ubuntu users "noobs" because apparently, they don't know how to use a "proper" distro. It's not that I want to start dissing Ubuntu people, too. But to be honest, in this situation and my knowledge, it's awkward admiting I'm using Ubuntu. But that's just me...

I'm staying with you people a bit longer, perhaps until Edgy and some more, but that's only because of the huge amount of support I get here. If I knew how to get the "elite" Slackware to use apt -properly-, I'd go for it immediately. Debian? Ubuntu's mother? why not? Or arch-linux which is a slim and fast distro meant to modificated. Or Gentoo, with it's brilliant BSD-style ports system. But I'd still be missing all the deb packages I can get for Debian/Ubuntu. Oh well...
One thing that's really annoys me is the fact that people start to talk Ubuntu = Linux. Of course ok on these forums, but you shouldn't do this in general

Ubuntu is becoming mainstream. More and more Joe Averages are starting to get this installed by friends or someone. Good thing or bad? Thanks for reading. Opinions?

Is this anything like fans turning away from a band just because they got big?

Dont care what others think. Use Ubuntu if it suits you. Honestly, after learning on Ubuntu then tryin Debian, theres no big difference I could see.

Re: Ubuntu becoming -too- mainstream?

Are you worried about the state of the OS, the community, or your personal image?

I, for one, like a stable, fast product that is simple to use. Ubuntu accomplishes that, so that's why I use it. I'm not worried what other people think about my choice in software just like I am not concerned about their choice unless it is harming/hampering them in some way.

A bit of all, I guess.

Not saying that I can't. I just wanted a few other opinions

Re: Ubuntu becoming -too- mainstream?

Please, I'm being serious here. I don't want to be one of those "elite" guys using some strange piece of compiled software and duct tape, and I don't want to be one of those that turn away just because it's getting popular. Neither do I want to belong to the "cool" kids. It's just getting too popular for my tastes, but not in the way like mentioned above/before by metalmusicaddict
Also, I'm trying to get some serious opinions on the matter, not on my decisions :/

That actually made me laugh.

Re: Ubuntu becoming -too- mainstream?

It depends on what you want out of a system. I don't want to piss with it all the time. I just want to sit down and do what I want to do.

If you stick with "official" repositories, you should be fine. Anybody who adds "Joe's Repositories and Stuff" is just asking for trouble.

Linux will be "mainstream" when it goes over 30% of marketshare. I think we've got some time yet.

Re: Ubuntu becoming -too- mainstream?

I just dont understand why you care? Use what you like. Its cooler to stand where you are than give into someone elses pressure if you ask me. Dont worry about it.

Do you think the 90's was a cool time to be a Metalhead? Nooo...

Its actually pretty sad that even in our small community there are people who want to be divisive.

400 repos!!! WTF, you have got to be kidding me. I only got the Ubuntu and Kubuntu (KDE-354, amarok) on mine. No deb-src either.

Well, I don't see how Ubuntu is even close to mainstream. Most likely less then 1% of home desktops are running Ubuntu.

Don't use third party repo's. Any security bugs will be fixed asap and patched.

I doubt GNU/Linux will have 20% anytime soon. Maybe never.

I don't get your fascination with 'mainstream' Isn't the internet mainstream? Shouldn't you be using carrier pigeons or something?
