I just thought I'd share my little Ubuntu journey :]
Well one morning when I turned on my (xp)desktop everything just seemed to start crashing and taking forever to load. I decided it was probably just time to reinstall to clean up everything. So about an hour or two later I've got a fresh XP install. So while trying to install drivers for all of my hardware and having windows try to give me a tour of an OS I've been using for years and trying to restart every five minutes I started to remember linux and started looking at some different distros (I had played with them in the past, but had never heard of ubuntu) I took that "which distro" quiz and saw a few I had tried like mandriva, fedora, and suse. But what was Ubuntu? I downloaded it (while XP kept trying to restart) after it finished I threw it on a CD and started the install, the only bump was getting my dual monitor setup working right.
I loved it! I've only kept it as a dual boot for a few games that I thought I'd actually play. But my gnome desktop is so pretty that I don't want to think about the blue and green bar in windows again ;]
After about a week or so a buddy of mine asked why I hadn't been gaming lately, I told him all about ubuntu which ended up with me installing it on his second computer.
(fast-forward to last week)
An out of state buddy who usually calls me for tech support hit me up having the same lockups with XP, I told him I ran into the same thing and solved it all "How?" he asked "I got rid of windows" (up to two converts now ;]) Then a few days later a few friends stopped by, one of them sat at my desk and nearly crapped a brick when he saw my desktop setup and started letting fly with the questions while I showed him showed him some compiz stuff. Long story short- I'm building him a computer and saving him a bundle with ubuntu. (up to three now!)
So far I'm loving it and having all kinds of fun helping them get everything setup and going how they want. I've even got everything working great on my new laptop (even wifi!) It's still got a small vista partition because the school I'm attending isn't very mac/linux friendly (may have to take my money elsewhere)
