thanx good howto shaved 10 secs of my hardy boot time
hardy has the deb "readahead" installed by default. does that mean
all the tweaking is not necessary anymore?
ah okay, thanks for the clearification!
For some reason, gedit won't let me save the boot file after deleting its contents. It says, "You do not have the permissions necessary to save the file. Please check that you typed the location correctly and try again."
Any suggestions?
Thanks
Try running gedit with sudo.

Instead of sudo you can use gksudo. gksudo is a GUI version sudo so that you can use it in a launcher and such without having to open a terminal for the password verification.
You really should use gksudo to run graphical programs. Using sudo there could cause some nasty permissions issues. Use sudo for command line only apps.
As in, drop to the terminal and key in
gksudo gedit and then do the edit and it will save

Thanks to all who helped: glotz, jdong, locke_99gs, and john nilsson; deleting the contents of 'boot' shaved a few seconds off boot up!
