Talking HOWTO: Download Ubuntu ISOs from multiple mirrors at once

    1. Install aria2 download utility. It's command line and supports bittorrent as well as metalink. Metalinks list mirrors, p2p, & checksums for a fast and easy download.

    2. Visit Metalink @ Packages Resources, Ubuntu section.

    3. From a terminal: aria2c URL

Re: HOWTO: Download Ubuntu ISOs from multiple mirrors at once

    Here's a good metalink overview:

Metalink makes complex download pages obsolete by replacing long lists of download mirrors and BitTorrent trackers with a single .metalink file. As you might have already guessed, a .metalink file is a file that tells a download manager all the different ways it can download a file. The file itself takes the form of an open XML standard that can list an unlimited number of HTTP and FTP sources as well as BitTorrent trackers and ed2k and magnet links.

It usually results in really fast and automatically verified downloads.

BitTorrent uses multiple PEERS at once. This is great and uses users bandwidth. But, not all places allow BT downloads. Sometimes they're blocked.

Metalink allows you to use whatever is available, whether it is BitTorrent, ed2k, magnet links, or mirror (http/ftp) servers.

Anyone interested in packaging aria2 for Ubuntu? It's in Debian unstable and testing.

Thanks phizz! It's super easy and usually super fast. Hopefully somebody will take the debian package & add it to the Ubuntu repository so people can install it easier. Lots of distributions are using this as the preferred way to transfer their ISOs...maybe Ubuntu will catch on.

aria2 Ubuntu packages are at http://packages.ubuntu.com/cgi-bin/s...keywords=aria2

    Then try some .metalinks out...

Please don't do something like this on release day... it might make your download speed look wonderful but puts unnecessary stress on the servers . Even if you spread your load on multiple mirrors, you're likely preventing someone else from getting their hands on a copy of Ubuntu.
