Re: PLEASE READ: The Latest Updates Break the Xserver!
I have followed tseliot's instructions, but it has not solved the problem.
I have a Siemens Lifebook, but am not sure as the the graphics card, except that it must be an ATI Radeon judging from the output fromXorg.0.log: (II) ATI: Candidate "Device" section "ATI Technologies, Inc. Radeon RV100 QY [Radeon 7000/VE]". (EE) No devices detected. After upgrading xorg-core to 10.4 and verifying its existence with aptitude, I searched for what drivers I might have. I then removed and reinstalled xserver-xorg-driver-ati AND xserver-xorg-driver-atimisc, was told by apt-get the actions hade been successful, but nevertheless X still fails with the above error message. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I do not want to reinstall. Cheers Toby |

Re: PLEASE READ: The Latest Updates Break the Xserver!
This fix worked perfectly for me. I had no gui for about 5 minutes total. Also, I didn't lose any data or anything. The support that comes with Ubuntu, which is itself free, makes Ubuntu an incredible value.
Stuff like this happens, even to big companies like Sun and Microsoft. |

Toby, When I read the bug report for "the incident," the buggy behavior in xorg-core 10.3 caused "ATI Technologies, Inc. Radeon RV100 QY [Radeon 7000/VE]" to be listed in error. Since you have 10.4 and are still having this problem, you probably have bad info in your xorg.conf. 1. Go to /etc/X11 ... cd /etc/X11 2. Copy the current copy to a safe name .... sudo cp xorg.conf xorg.conf-badbadbad 3. look for prior copies of xorg.conf and use it to restore ... sudo cp xorg.conf-20060731 xorg.conf 4. reboot ... sudo reboot If you don't have a prior copy (in step 3), there's a command you can use to recreate it. Someone else, please provide that command -- because I cannot find it right away. Everyone knows it, except for me. HTH

Re: PLEASE READ: The Latest Updates Break the Xserver!
Firstly i must appollogise for my earlier post.. i was in a bit of a bad mood & i am deeply sorry for ranting, i now understand im complaining about something that is free.
Humans do & will make errors The Problem: I have followed tselliot's instructions but it seems i have lost GDM, when i start up all i get is the login prompt with black screen. Which then i have to type: startx I know it's not much of a problem but it is not as it was before, What has changed? Corrective Actions taken so far: I have tried to reinstall ati drivers from repo & ati site, i also reinstalled resricted modules for my current running kernel before the drivers each time. No joy. I then tried to reinstall ubuntu-desktop, but strangely when apt-get did this it just replaced 48kb of files????? Reboot. no joy. login. startx. fired up synaptic reinstalled GDM no joy. At this point i could check which files have root/user permissions, but i have no idea what files to check & what permisions these files need! I am lost & out of my depth & as well as that my legs have got cramp from treading water for too long!! but i am still reluctant to return to windows please help Quick tip: You don't need to reboot, try: telinit 1 this will send all process the TERM signal!! & drop to single user then go straight to runlevel 2
