    Charles Profitt: Reminder: Vote in the Ubuntu Community Council Election

    Charles Profitt encourages all Ubuntu Members to vote in the Community Council election. He points out that 41% of eligible voters voted in the last election and hopes to increase that percentage this time, concluding "Remember to vote! Let's ROCK the election!"

    Nicholas Skaggs: Google Code In 2015

    Nicholas Skaggs announces the acceptance of Ubuntu as a mentoring organization for Google Code In 2015. He encourages community members who are interested and have the required skills to help out by becoming a mentor. He confirms that this will involve some work, "but not as much as you may think." If you're still not sure, Nicholas shares a FAQ about Ubuntu's participation in the program and a list of contacts to reach out to if you have further questions.

    Ubuntu App Developer Blog: Here comes the brand new Ubuntu SDK IDE tools

    Benjamin Zeller writes for the Ubuntu App Developer Blog about a rework for the SDK tools which have resulted in two new packages being released to help more beauty come from developers hands. The new packages are *-sdk-ide & *-sdk-dev, and a PPA is provided for you to use them. Note: because newer versions of QtCreator & Ubuntu UI Toolkit are used; some adjustments may be necessary especially if you use older versions like 14.04LTS, with help found in the article.

    Canonical Design Team: Using Vanilla with Jekyll

    Anthony Dillon from the Canonical Design Team explains how to install and use Vanilla with Jekyll. Anthony notes all went well until GitHub pages revealed issues, so he briefly gives the pros and cons of various methods of using the tools and justifies why he thinks using Git submodules is best.

    Harald Sitter: Muon 5.5 and Carrots

    Harald Sitter shares a photo and some details from a sprint in Munich where the KDE and Kubuntu developers worked on and decided to release version 5.5.0 of the Debian package manager Muon.

    BQ Aquaris Ubuntu Edition phones land in Russia

    The Canonical Insights blog reports that BQ's Aquaris line of Ubuntu Phones will soon be available to buy in Russia. First up is the E5 at 15,999 rubles and then the E4.5 will be 12,499 rubles. They also write that Scopes developed just for the Russian market will be preloaded such as Vkontakte, Yandex, Mail.Ru and Kinopoisk.

    Phone Update: OTA-8

    A report from the Canonical Insight blog says that the newest OTA has been released. They write that this update includes big changes including a new weather application, improved Contacts sync, new Book aggregator scope, new Twitter scope with the ability to tweet, comment, follow, and unfollow, with tons more!

    Ubuntu Studio Is a Treasure Trove for Creative Types

    Jack M. Germain of Linux Insider takes a look at Ubuntu Studio 15.10 which he says "bundles a nearly full range of multimedia content-creation applications for workflows involving audio, graphics, video, photography and publishing." He reviews some of the bundled applications, points out that the classic Xfce desktop is installed by default, and concludes that Ubuntu Studio 15.10 is a solid gateway for artistic enthusiasts catering more to graphic and audio users.

    Unity 8 for Ubuntu Desktop Explained - What You Need to Know

    Silviu Stahie of Softpedia writes that Unity 8 is coming to the Ubuntu desktop but that there is still a lot of uncertainty about how it will look. He says that one common misconception is that it will look like Unity 8 on the phone, but it already looks quite different. Silviu reminds us that although Canonical wants to have a single operating system for all devices there will be different builds but the core will be the same.

    Ubuntu MATE Developers Are Preparing Something Special for 16.04 LTS

    Silviu Stahie of Softpedia explains that Ubuntu MATE has been very transparent with the donations that they receive from users. He reports that they will be making donations to other teams "who are not involved with their OS in any way." And they are using the time running up to the 16.04 release to run some small paid projects.

    Visiting the System76 headquarters -- a Willy Wonka-like superfan experience

    Brian Fagioli of Beta News reports that System76 had their first superfan contest to select people for its event of the same name. He says that users had to create multiple forms of media from logos, gifs, to an online game to try to win, and that the winners received a paid round-trip to their headquarters in Denver where they were able to meet the whole team.

    Ubuntu 15.10 review: Wily Werewolf leaves scary experimentation for next year

    Scott Gilbertson of Ars Technica goes through some of unexciting changes that 15.10 beings but also the welcomed updates, and refinements. He covers several changes, from the removal of Ubuntu's own scroll bars and move to GNOME's stock ones, a really nice kernel update, and other application updates.

    Ubuntu Online Summit 2015 Was the Most Attended UOS Event of All Times

    Silviu Stahie of Softpedia passes on information that the most recent Ubuntu Online Summit "appears to be one of the most crowded UOS events in history." He goes on to quickly share tidbits on other community news, including the start of the Community Council elections, UbuCon updates from Florida and California and the latest from Ubuntu Core Apps and the newly updated Ubuntu Developer website.

    Ubuntu Phone is getting better

    Dedoimedo has updated its review of the Ubuntu Phone from over several months ago with the recent release of OTA8. Their experience with the update process was uneventful and successful. From new icons in the Dash, the System Setting changes, the kinda new Hotspot feature, and updated design choices in the applications left a more polished feeling and usage.

    Review: Ubuntu GNOME 15.10 is what vanilla Ubuntu should be

    Bryan Lunduke of Network World reports on his disappointment with Unity and subsequent installation of the Ubuntu GNOME flavor, writing: "It's good looking. It's logically laid out and easy to use. And fast."
