How to exit prompts given while updating packages

When updating (sudo apt-get update) sometimes a package will ask if I want to overwrite an older configuration file. I have occasionally pressed 'D' to see the differences between the two files. But I do not know how to exit (or confirm one way or another) the next prompt that shows the difference between the two configurations. I am stuck there. (Even CTRL+ C does not work.) How do I exit this prompt? And is there a way to have the package maintainer's version downloaded to a different file name so I can look over the two configuration versions in another program after installation?

I always thought there should be a "MAYBE" button for this.
Your files aren't in the cloud, they're just on someone else's computer.
