    Linux by Microsoft

Now that Microsoft is developing its own Linux should Ubuntu be worried?

No. What Microsoft is developing is a network (Switch, Router) controller based on Linux for virtual (cloud) environments. They are a little late to the game.

Canonical relies on other developers for the applications used in their cloud system. Currently, I think OpenStack is one of them.

Use whatever OS or desktop works for you. Dual boot or use VMs if you want. Backup your computer regularly, and definitely before upgrading, partitioning, or installing an OS.

It's a Linux OS for the Azure cloud computing platform.

This is a big news for those who follow such things. That MS would build his own Linux distro underline the shift of paradigm in the Redmond Firm.

I have to agree with night_sky2 here. This may not be a consumer-focused Linux distro that Microsoft is putting out (so Ubuntu is hardly threatened by this), but it is still significant in that Microsoft is clearly not afraid to use Linux for their technological needs now. That certainly appears to be a paradigm shift from the way Ballmer treated Linux.

Well, they joined the Linux Foundation and donate to OpenBSD, so this is expected. Next, you will find hundreds of MS employees posting in the newbie forum...

... and awaiting the inevitable rock throwing that has been occurring on the others in the glut of 'Windows this or that' threads we've been getting here lately.

    Re: Linux by Microsoft

This is a manifestation of Nadella's dismissal of Ballmer's "Windows Everywhere" approach. Ballmer might have insisted that Azure be 100% Windows, even if Windows wasn't the best fit for a particular role.

Azure, though, is a service, not something you can buy in a box or download. Microsoft won't gain any additional revenue by avoiding non-Windows software on Azure.

Microsoft had been talking for months about "Windows As a Service" and declaring that Windows 10 is the "last" version of Windows. That could mean many things. But, I suspect it does mean Nadella has decided, like Google and Apple, that the days of betting the corporation solely on selling an operating system and a few applications are over.

When Microsoft said that Windows 10 is the "last version" of windows, what they were referring to that windows is now becoming a "rolling" model In other words, eventually windows 10 will be renamed just plain "windows" and there will be no further versions...instead, the system will roll, kind of like a linux rolling distribution does, with changes applied to the system that is already there...both new features as well as apps and the various updates they provide...
