No graphics at all in 12.04 toshiba 64-bit

4 days ago I tried to recover an erased document with xxxx but everything froze. So, I re-booted to my surprise that there are no graphics. I have read and tried all variations of reinstalling and reconfiguring the xorg file without success. I do have tons of important information and e-mails and programmes running in this computer I cannot afford to lose. So, I badly need to recover the graphics capabilities. I would greatly appreciate any help and leads.

GUI not booting at all. I would greatly appreciate any help on how to restore gui at boot. I can get it to work if I go into recovery mode and then it starts (lower graphics it says). But there should be a simple way! I upgraded to 14.04 but to my surprise, it did NOT fix the problem. I am sure there is somebody here who knows. Please, help.
