Black screen during bootup on laptop?

I'm having this issue with Ubuntu on my laptop.
I noticed this when I installed Ubuntu for the first time, the screen went black for ages and I had to hard shutdown my system. I had to hard shutdown and reboot about 4 times to get it to boot.
I installed the latest proprietary AMD drivers and that during that time.

Now it's doing it again.
I boot it up and it has the purple screen, then sometimes the Ubuntu logo, and then it has black with a command line interface with my name and computer name, and then it either totally goes black or theres a small white line in the corner and nothing happens.

This is really annoying me; how can I fix it?

What kind of laptop (ram,cpu)? And you sure about the driver?
