SCRIPT: GrubED - GUI Grub editing

Ok, here's the instructions:

1) Download the grubed.zip file.
2) Extract this file, you should be left with a folder called 'grubed'.
3) Open up a terminal, and change to this grubed directory. If you've never used the terminal before, the command to change directory is 'cd' (just like in the Windows command line). The command to list the contents of a directory is 'ls' (it's essentially the same as 'dir' on Windows).
4) Once inside the grubed directory, type the following command:

sudo sh ./install

You will be asked for your password. Type it in (although you won't see it being typed, so make sure you spell it correctly!), and the install script will begin installing everything. If there are any problems, the install script will tell you what you need to do, but there shouldn't be any if you're using an ordinary Ubuntu install.

Once grubed is installed, you should be able to launch it using the launcher provided (you can just copy and paste it onto your desktop / panel / whatever). You can also run it from the command line by typing 'gksudo grubed'.

EDIT:

A normal Ubuntu install should already have everything in place for the install script to function properly. Kubuntu and Xubuntu may require you to manually install zenity (the installer script will inform you if zenity is not installed). Zenity is available in the repositories, so just use Add/Remove or Synaptic to install it.

I am having trouble getting the splash screen to work. I do not have the custom color enabled. I get an error of cannot read the xxx file.

Any suggestions?

What's the requirements on Grub background images again?

The requirements for background images can be found in the help file, which you can access via the main grubed menu.

The script will only recognise .xpm.gz extensions on images. This is not a REAL grub restriction (ie, it's only the script which enforces this), but it tends to save a lot of headaches. Again, the help file should tell you all you need to know.

I have tried using images with that extension with the correct resolution as stated in the help file...Still nothing, getting the same error. I cannot even get the supplied image file to display.

When you receive the error message, is this an error message given by GrubEd, or is it an error message you receive when you boot your computer?

Sorry for the questions, I'm in the process of moving and my own computer is packed away for the time being, so it's difficult to test stuff. Added to this I'm going to be living on a boat all next week so I can't really help you out during that time.

From the information you just gave, it looks like everything should just work. Did you use the installer script to install GrubEd?
