Re: SCRIPT: GrubED - GUI Grub editing

i'm at work now and have have to test it later, but i doubt its GrubEd, cuz everything worked till i installed kubuntu so i guess it just changed the path or whatever. thanks for the help

also just to confirm what your saying, if this goes properly i should be able to use GrubEd from gnome even though kubuntu is on a dif hdd, right as long i did what you said?

sorry for all this i'm just slightly nervous screwing with grub.

GrubEd will only alter the menu.lst file of the partition it is installed on. If you have Ubuntu and Kubuntu installed, then using it on Ubuntu will only alter the menu.lst on the Ubuntu partition, and using it on Kubuntu will only alter the menu.lst on the Kubuntu partition.

Re: SCRIPT: GrubED - GUI Grub editing

ok then that must be whats wrong because nothing i do in ubuntu is effecting the grub that i see at bootup, like GrubEd or direct edit of menu.lst

should i just reinstall grub from ubuntu?

btw this is the men.lst from ubuntu

    Code:
    # menu.lst - See: grub(8), info grub, update-grub(8)
    # grub-install(8), grub-floppy(8),
    # grub-md5-crypt, /usr/share/doc/grub
    # and /usr/share/doc/grub-doc/.

Weird - Kubuntu doesn't show up on your Ubuntu menu.lst. You may want to run 'sudo update-grub' to see if it adds it properly.

As long as your menu.lst file is there - GrubEd should be able to alter it - regardless of whether or not Grub then notices your changes. If GrubEd isn't changing anything at all - then that's a bit more confusing. Do you have a 'weird' setup? Is your /boot on a different partition or something like that?

Re: SCRIPT: GrubED - GUI Grub editing

good question ill look when i get home, i really don't know. I use the standard install for ubuntu and kubuntu, so i would think it would b at default, as far as partitions go ubuntu has its own hd with normal partitions for /, home and swap.

kubuntu is on a hd with xp, but if i recall is default as well just root and swap.

edit: ok i updated grub, no dif.
im just gonna reinstall grub and see what happens, hey if i screw something up it won't be the worst thing ive ever done

The term 'cd' is a command you can type into the terminal to move between different directories/folders on your hard drive. When you load up a terminal, it will start in your home directory. Since grubed is on your desktop, you'd type this:

    cd Desktop/GrubEd/

And it SHOULD take you to the GrubEd folder. The cd command is one of the main terminal functions, you should learn how to use it.
