What is the best way to rip a CD (without using Sound Juicer)?

I need to do something very basic which is why I am asking for advice.

All I want to do is take an audio CD and rip the tracks. The CD tracks are in .wav format. I've used Sound Juicer but it rips to .ogg format which won't play on the Kindle.

I need something to convert to mp3.

Also, I would like the audio quality to be (roughly) the same!

    Thanks!

As blasphemous as it sounds, dBpoweramp (a Windows application) runs quite nicely under WINE for ripping CD's to a variety of formats...

Sound Juicer will convert them to MP3! It is under Edit>Preference towards the bottom see my Screenshot.
There is a lot that you can use like K3B, Audacity, on and on.
    Kind Regards

I just use Rhythmbox. Works just fine.

I use the command line application abcde and a standard abcde.conf file.

So I just need to put the CD in thr drive, use command abcde and if the disk is known to the database it is ripped to whatever format is set in the abcde.conf file with no further input needed.

    Worth a try, I think.

Thanks all. I actually just uses Sound Juicer. It converts to mp3, m4a, flac, and ogg.

That brings me to my next question.

For my wav file (from the CD), flac is 82MB, m4a is 23MB, mp3 is 18MB, and ogg is 13MB.

What is the difference between these formats? Is one "better" than the others? Why would you use (for example) flac rather than (for example) mp3?

    Thanks!

Flac is a lossless format meaning you won't lose any quality from the original but end up with a larger file, the others are lossy meaning you do lose some quality. Whether you would notice the difference I guess depends on the equipment you play back on and how sensitive your ears are

Flac & wav are lossless formats which means in theory they are as good as the original. m4a, mp3 & ogg are lossy formats. The smaller the file the more of the original you lose, so the poorer the quality.
However most people cannot tell the difference between a 320kbps mp3 & a flac file, unless it's played on a high quality system.

And abcde is just about to release a new version with a big list of new features
