Unhappy TV screen and laptop's go blank

    Hey fellow Ubuntuers
I have a Toshiba Satellite L300 hooked up with a VGA to a Samsung TV. If I let my computer sit idle for too long, screen goes blank and there is no way to escape it, no CTRL+D, no CTRL+ALT+F1, nothing, only force shutdown. This happens in Windows and in Ubuntu. I decided to try other desktop environments, like LXDE, KDE, MATE, all the same problems.
Now it's rocking Ubuntu GNOME and it's only happened so far once, and it was a grey screen, not blank.

Any idea on this? It would be very helpful as this pc is used mainly by my dad and mum to google stuff, but it's very bad to have to shut it down every time you use it.

    Thanks in advance

as that issue happens with all the OSs, then glance at the TV settings (doc & menu settings) , something might be wrongly set
