Can Ubuntu be locked down and encrypted better than Windows can to keep anyone and everyone out of it?
Would something like bit locker make it even more secure?

encryption won't help much if you unencrypt the whole system & data and then access internet. it doesn't guard against that. it guards more if someone stole your PC.
it does have more security features than windows and no known viruses in the wild.
Read the easy to understand, lots of pics Ubuntu manual.
Do i need antivirus/firewall in linux?
Full disk backup (newer kernel -> suitable for newer PC): Clonezilla
User friendly full disk backup: Rescuezilla
The answer is it depends. It depends on the use case, the user, surfing habits, location, etc ad nauseum. This answer stands in spite of the inevitable flame war this question always ignites.
You're asking the wrong question. Ask how to better secure either in your specific use case and circumstance. Understand what your highest risks are and then defend against those.
Knock knock.
Race condition.
Who's there?
Information Security is not a device. It is not something you can buy. It is a continuous process of training, monitoring, reviews, penetration tests and audits.
That being said, it is a helluvalot easier to secure a Linux machine than a Windows machine and there are many reasons for that.
No viruses, but there's still malware, for example it still has rootkits.
