    Announcing the "wily werewolf"

    Mark Shuttleworth explains that he thought it would be fun to use the opportunity of a "widely watched keynote" to announce the name of the "W" release. He briefly summarizes why certain suggestions could not be used, and ends his announcement with: "Instead, my waggish friends, the winsome W on which we wish will be... the 'wily werewolf'."

    The Kubuntu Team announces the release of packages for KDE Applications 15.04 for Kubuntu 15.04. They advise from where the packages can be downloaded and to where bugs should be reported.

    Ubuntu now available for pre-order on AMD-based laptops at Ebuyer.com

    Canonical announces the launching by Ebuyer of a series of AMD-based HP laptops preloaded with Ubuntu 14.04 LTS. They say that they are currently only available on pre-order but will be fully available by the end of May, and that the machines are Ubuntu Certified. Canonical says: "The launch with Ebuyer.com not only signals a significant milestone in terms of solidifying a partnership with one of the pre-eminent local electronic retailers, but increases Ubuntu's e-tail presence here in the UK."

    Using Snappy OVA Images when you don't have a Cloud Fabric

    Ben Howard writes: "The Snappy OVA images are nothing more than the Ubuntu Snappy Cloud images that have been wrapped up in an OVA container." He shows us how to use those images, which expect to be run in a cloud environment, on Virtualbox or VMware Fusion/Workstation.

    Scott Gilbertson, writing for The Register, describes two noticeable changes in the release of Ubuntu 15.04: the move to systemd as the default init system and, for desktop users, the ability to always show menu items.

    Ubuntu 15.04 review: Beauty or "boring" is in the eye of the beholder

    Scott Gilbertson of Ars Technica writes a review of Ubuntu 15.04, writing that on the desktop: "Ubuntu 15.04's Unity desktop is mature, stable, and not really in need of many improvements." He continues by discussing changes to server, the default kernel and changes to some of the flavor releases.

    Ubuntu may beat Windows 10 to phone-PC convergence after all

    Chris Hoffman of PCWorld writes a comparison of the efforts for PC convergence by Microsoft for Windows to those of Canonical with Ubuntu, noting that both companies have slipped deadlines for convergence. He speculates on the promised Ubuntu Phone convergence release this year: "Canonical will probably still get there, but Microsoft might beat Ubuntu to convergence even if it does launch the new phone this year. If the phone slips to 2016, Microsoft will almost certainly beat them to market."

    An Ubuntu Phone Will Ship This Year With The Converged Unity Experience

    Michael Larabel of Phoronix informs us that during Mark Shuttleworth's keynote of the recent Ubuntu Online Summit a few details were released about a new Ubuntu phone that is supposed to ship this year. He says that it was revealed that the phone will feature the converged desktop experience, no real timeline was given for release, and neither was the name the manufacturer of the device.

    Mark Shuttleworth Promises Ubuntu Phone that Turns into PC This Year

    Silviu Stahie of Softpedia writes that Mark Shuttleworth announced during his keynote from Ubuntu Online Summit that an Ubuntu Phone with true desktop convergence will be released later this year.

    Vijay of TechWorm writes that Erle Robotics has announced a quadcopter based on Ubuntu Snappy Core and ROS, with twenty minute flight time and payload support of up to 2kg.

    Ubuntu 15.10 Wily Werewolf Opens for Development

    Joey-Elijah Sneddon of OMG! Ubuntu! informs us that Ubuntu 15.10 is now open for development and that live images for testing will be built. He says that there will be few changes early on, that it is not recommended to upgrade right now, and quotes Adam Conrad as saying: "This is fairly good timing, as we'll have a bunch of new shiny in 15.10, and some time to polish all of that for 16.04, so get to merging and let's make this another awesome release."

    Xubuntu Core: Lightweight Ubuntu Distro Goes on a Diet

    Joey-Elijah Sneddon of OMG! Ubuntu! covers the latest version of Xubuntu which features a slimmed down desktop experience without pre-installed apps. He says that it is currently installable via the Ubuntu Minimal ISO, and that the team expects to release single CD sized ISO images of Xubuntu Core for the 15.10 cycle.
