App manager similar to Windows 3.1's progman.exe?

    Hi!

Was wondering if anyone knows of an app manager that will run in Ubuntu 14.04 (I'm actually using Xubuntu,) that works similar to the old progman.exe from the ancient days of yore. Just a simple program with app launchers grouped into little folders in a program window. Short, sweet, old-school nostalgia mixed in with Ubuntu dynamism.

Not sure what program.exe is/was. But a google search suggests that maybe you are looking for something like drawers or unity-launcher-folders. Unfortunately they work only in unity (and drawers apparently only on Ubuntu 12.04 and 14.04) http://www.webupd8.org/2012/08/add-s...cher-with.html http://unity-folders.exceptionfound.com/
Not sure if there is anything similar for xfce.

Interesting options. Thanks for the reply. Progman.exe is from Windows 3.1:

Well doesn't the whisker menu allow you to group applications and show them in a side panel?

P.S. Win3.1 was kind of before my time.

I remember Windows 3.1. It saved Microsoft because Windows 3 was so useless apparently.

In Ubuntu and the flavours we have system settings and then either the dash with its groupings or cascading menus of one form or another. It all depends on the design features of the desktop environment and user interface.

The file browser pcmanfm has an applications entry in the side pane.

You could turn off the side pane and toolbar buttons and create a launcher to open pcmanfm to the applications menu...
    Code:
    pcmanfm menu://applications/

It came installed on that Tandy 1000 you loved so much.

You can get the same look with Nemo, after you group the apps into folders. All 3.1 Progman was was a file manager

Gno-Menu would be the modern implementation

I remember it too, it's what caused me to seek out and install OS/2, for which I've been eternally grateful to Microsoft.

Progman, mmm... That is pretty much what all the Linux task bars and file managers do, or the KDE Desktop View app.
