rMBP (MacBook 10,1) cannot change resolution without going to black screen

Ubuntu on my Macbook Retina only allows me to use the native resolution of 2880x1800, which makes everything way too small.

When I try to change it via the System Settings application, I just get a black screen and need to restart my computer.

The same happens when I try to use
    Code:
    xrandr --output eDP-1 --mode 1920x1200
    to change it.

I have an issue which is related to this. In my case, I can still use [Ctrl] + [Alt] + [F1] to go to another seat and then the same with [F7] to go back to the graphical session. This “un-blacks” the screen for me. I can still the mouse cursor the whole time. Do you have the same thing?
